My suggestion would be to spend a couple days on the Big Island. Airfare between islands is super cheap (usually have to connect through HNL, but maybe there is a direct flight from OGG-KOA?)
there are direct flights from Maui to Hilo. check out http://www.hawaiianair.com for your inter-island tickets. to drive from the airport to Kilauea Volcano park will be ~40 mins and plan to spend a few hours there driving around "Crater Rim Drive" and going to the area of lava flow. you wont get to go close enough to actually see the lava ...just large plumes of smoke where the lava is meeting the ocean.
nbblondie - we have our accommodations already set up in Maui for our stay so we wouldn't be able to stay on the Big Island over night - good idea though!

Big island is really... big. Volcanos National Park is pretty far from either airport. I think its pretty hard to give yourself enough time to really enjoy the park if you're rushing in and out in a days time unless theres reallly early flights in and really late ones out. Check for closures on the crater rim drive too, last year a vent had opened up and most the drive was closed. Highly recommend the hike down to the bottom of the crater.. cant remember the name, but the trail head is near the Thurstan lava tube.
If you want to see lava, I was told the only way to get nice and close is a helicoptor tour, but even that is hit or miss if theres good surface flow anywhere.
If you don't want to worry about doing everything separately, you can take a day trip to the Big Island. There's a tour that includes roundtrip air from Maui, transportation to Volcanoes National Park, & a drive through Hilo. You basically show up at the Maui airport & the rest is taken care of by the tour operator. Stress-free!

Hello!
We are honeymooning in Maui and one of our main goals while there is to see some lava flow! I know we can do that at the Hawaii Volcanoes National Park on Hawaii's Big Island - but that means we have to travel from the island of Maui to the Big Island.
Has anyone done an excursion like this? If so, did you do it on your own or did you book it with a tour group?
