Have you discussed this with your fiance?  What does he want to do?  If both trips are equally appealing to you then Smokey Mountains probably makes more sense.  If Aruba has always been a dream honeymoon for the both of you and you both still really want to go, maybe you can make it work by postponing it to a later time or finding a better deal somewhere?  it’s great that you want to be financially prudent in this kind of economy – just sit down with your fiance and prioritize how you want to allocate your money.

First of all– you both need to make a list of what you want out of your honeymoon/vacation… Do you totally want to be alone? Do you want/need a week of relaxing with a good book? Are you history buffs? Do you love being a tourist and seeing the sights?

Once you both have decided that then the planning will be much easier.  You know what to expect from the Smokies there is tons to do and see… and aruba is a beach– lots of laying around but also there are tours etc available.

You could also look at where plane tickets are cheaper! Find cheap tickets to Mexico, San Franc. ,Canada, Jamica  Seattle whereever and then plan something!!

Gaitlinburg is full of stuff to do, and if you have a vehicle, there’s a ton of stuff nearby to drive to and see.  Chattanooga is only about 2 hours, and there’s some really awesome caves a little further north.  Plus Pigeon Forge and Gaitlinburg are full of shopping and touristy things.

I love the idea of going to the Smokey Mountains, it is such a beautiful area, & maybe you would feel more relaxed about it as it wouldn’t cost as much, as well as not having the stress of travelling so far.
Maybe you could plan an Aruba trip for your anniversary…?

I wasn’t sure how to vote.  If you both are really thinking of the Smokeys now, why not go for it?  You don’t even seem to be out any money.  Have you been to Gatlinburg before?  If it’s that close to where you live, maybe you should go down there to take a peak at some of the stuff to do there etc.  I’ve been there before.  Just my opinion but it’s kind of fun, but cheesy.  There are tons of overly priced touristy things to do.  Also, the hotels etc, seemed pretty dated and run down, with really cramped parking lots.  It’s also really crowed during the day, and takes forever to drive anywhere.  Maybe we went when it was super busy, but it took us almost an hour to drive 7 miles.  Although the pictures you linked up looked nice.

But if you really like Gatlinburg and are excited to do it, then save the money from Aruba and go for it.  More power to you.

Be careful about pricing out the plane tix right now…the best time to buy is actually about 60 days out.  That’s usually the lowest price.  The farter away from that you get, the higher the price.

I would hold off and see if ticket prices come down a bit.  Check with yapta.com or farecast.com

My honeymoon tix were originally pricing at $1500 per person, but have since come down to $700 per person.  Much more reasonable!!

It sounds like you really want a tropical, non-local location but are concerned about the cost of Aruba. Have you looked into Florida (e.g. Tampa/ Clearwater Beach area) or Puerto Rico? That way, you could do the tropical vacation thing, but for less money.

$1400-1600 for flights to Aruba from IN seems very steep.  I think you can definitely find something a lot cheaper, especially given the types of discounts airlines are offering lately.  I know JetBlue flies to Aruba, so I’d check them.  Also, try the discount sites — travelzoo, travelocity, cheapoair, etc.

That being said, it sounds like you’d be equally happy either place.  If that’s the case, then you should probably save the money and go to TN.  Plenty of people where I’m from (western NC) honeymoon there and had a great time.  I don’t think it matters too much if there’s a lot to do since honeymooners usually spend a lot of "together" time.  There are lots of restaurants in the area, and that’s probably the most important thing outside of the hotel.

I voted for Smokey mountains but that is just my idea of an awesome vacation, especially a honeymoon where you guys are so in love you wont mind the unplesantries of not being in the carrbean. I agree with the above poster who said to do Aruba for a anniversary
