I’m in a bit of a pickle. The resort we are getting married at has a couple of options of dinner choices. We can either do plated or buffet. My whole family (including myself and my FI father) are vegetarians – no fish-, my FI family and my friends are not. We can do the plated which they allow us to pick 2 entree options. It would be the beef fillet and the vegetarian option (which sounds pretty lame). OR we could do the bomb buffet!! The only problem is that the buffet requires a minimum of 50 people. We only have about 27 people attending so we would be paying extra for really no reason other than I think there are a lot more options for people to eat! I don’t know if this matters but our reception is outside
Plated would be around $1,100, buffet would be a whooping $2000
WHAT TO DO??? Should we just go for it and do the buffet??
BEEF FILLET OPTION
Three Lettuce Salad
Carrot Cream Soup (I think we can change the soup)
Beef Fillet au Gratin with mushrooms
$46.00 usd per person
Grilled Vegetable Salad with goat cheese OR Eggplant Salad with fresh Tomato.
$30.00 usd per person
BRUNCH BUFFET $40 USD per person
Cesar salad with palmitos
Fresh mushrooms with pesto salad
Artichoke and palmitos salad
Sushi & avocado salad
Orange & beetroot salad
Wild mushroom cream soup
Pasta with tomato or alfredo sauce
Sirloin steak with Shitake Mushrooms
Breaded chicken with coconut
Fresh salmon with grapefruit butter
Roasted lamb with Rosemary sauce
Seafood paella (Rice with saffron)
Potatoes au gratin
Fresh season vegetables
Tropical fresh fruit
Assorted desserts: Mango mousse, Selva Negra Cake, Cream Eclairs.

I would personally do the buffet if it wouldn’t break the budget.
I think the more options you have, the more tastes you can satisfy, and nobody leaves hungry.
If it’s not in budget, I wouldn’t worry about it though.

With so many vegetarians and what does sound like a pretty lame veggie option, I think you probably just pony up the extra $. It’s a fair bit, but it’ll make a big difference to your guests. Iin the scheme of things, $900 isn’t THAT much…

The buffet truly sounds fantastic- it had me at the seafood paella! Say no more! I generally prefer plated over buffet (bad experiences waiting in insanely long lines for very dried-out food) but if the menu is better and the logistics are handled properly, then go for the buffet if the budget allows.

Personally, I’d go with plated rather than buffet and put that extra $900 towards a vacation or something. It seems like such a waste when you’re paying for 50 people even though there are only 27 people there…you’re basically paying $74.00 per person.

Can you sub the lame vegetarian entree for a better one if you talk to the vendor? Even if it’s a bit pricier? I normally would do the buffet, but I couldn’t justify paying almost double for food.

@Lily_of_the_valley: I would probably add an extra course or another option and do plated. Like @As_You_Wish: pointed out, $74.00 is a huge amount of money per person.

Hmm. I think the buffest sounds AMAZING, but you should definitely get rid of half the meat (since there’s SO many vegetarians), and see if they’d come down on the price!

I always think plated is nicer. I also couldnt justify paying that much more for only 27 people. BUT in my area we have huge cocktail hours so the dinner doesnt mean much (I could be biased?).

Plated. It’s just one meal out of the year. Just make sure your cake is delicious!

I would do the buffet :/ I’m personally doing a played dinner but having a salad as your veggie meal option doesn’t seem like a great deal.

@Lily_of_the_valley: is that the only veggie option the venue has?? surely they can prepare a much better dish than just that. what about grilled veggie pasta?
what is one of your favourite vegetarian dinners? i would suggest giving them a couple of options of what you would like and ask them which would be easier for them to prepare. (think of existing ingredients that one would have on hand and not specific, hard to get seasonal items).
i’m sure they’ll do it for you.

@Lily_of_the_valley: As a meat eater, I love the plated option. I would save the money and go with plated (FI would probably get veggie and I would get beef– they both sound great). With plated, you get the advantage of more time to talk and less time to spend in line and chance spilling anytihng on you.
One thing to check, how good is the veggie option? I think it sounds great, but a risotto or stuffed pepers or curry might be better. We had a curry and it was a huge hit. Honestly, as a steak lover, I would go with a curry or a risotto over a steak any day

@Lily_of_the_valley: honestly, even the buffet isn’t great for vegitarians. Why can they only give you salads?!
