That is pretty bad. I hope that was just a bad day for her. How was the food? Was the actual catering done well?

I’m confused about what your marital status had to do with this…

I think she responded a little rudely but at the same time if they just filled all the jugs it would kind of suck to get to a table and realize you needed to refill it right away. Couldn’t you have gone to the kitchen or a drinking fountain instead of standing and waiting for twenty minutes?

FabBride2016:  Ah, ok.

I was going to ask you what your marital status had to do with it, because the mention of it seemed so random, but I’m guessing you meant that she didn’t know she was talking to a potential customer. Is that correct?

What would your marital status have to do with it?

And why didn’t you just say ‘I am a guest’?

I would think that the marital status denotes that the OP is a potential future customer.

FabBride2016: Ugh. That happened to me at a wedding in NYC and I stated that if they weren’t willing to help or allow me to help myself, I would be happy to let the bride help me herself.

They snapped to pretty quickly after that.

julies1949:  Yeah, that’s what made sense to me. I was asking her if that was the reason she mentioned it.

FabBride2016:  She could’ve been nicer about it, but honestly I would be a little annoyed too if I was setting up an event and some random person came in the back and started touching things before the event began. Did you introduce yourself to her when you first asked for water? Did you ask if it was ok to get water from those particular jugs? I can see it from both sides…

She could have been nicer but from the perspective of a vendor who is not being paid to give water to another vendor who’s forgotten to bring necessities for their own staff, I can totally see her not wanting to go out of her way to help you when she had other things to do. You going into the off-limits service prep area to help yourself was a bad idea; you’re basically poking around in her equipment and her work area, and for all she knows, you’re another vendor.  I’m in food service and anyone who walks into my kitchen without permission is lucky if I let them off with just a snarky remark.    Yeah this caterer wasn’t especially nice but I think your expectations of how that interaction were going to go were waaaaaaaaaaaaaay off the mark.

At that point in time you were not there as a guest. Yes, it would have been nice if she got you some water but at the same time she isn’t there to serve the other vendors while trying to get her own work done.

Again, I do think she was a little rude but really? Standing around for twenty minutes waiting for her to bring you water? Why not just go find the faucet?

I don’t understand why you thought the caterer should be giving you water? the caterer was not hired by you and her job was to do exactly what she was doing, setting up and getting ready for the event she was hired for. She probably thought you were with the DJ and if that was the case it was not her job to cater to the dj and his crew. I think it was more work for you to wait 20 minutes than it would have been to just go and get yourself some water. I don’t think that was a caterer being mean. And even if she was ok with getting water, that would have been a favor not something that she was just supposed to do.
