Tomorrow we are meeting the priest for the first time.  We don’t have a date and I was envision this meeting as sorting that stuff out but wondered if anyone had any advice or guidance as to what else could happen at this meeting?

It is a catholic church and I just wondering what to expect.  I have heard stories and read horror posts about the first meeting being difficult; the priest trying to press views on the couple etc.  More of like an “interview” on your personal beliefs, then a pleasant get to know you meeting.  Both my FI and I are Catholic, but among other things that are frowned upon, we have lived together for a year and half already!  I suppose I am a bit anxious but was hoping I could get some last minute insight from other bees that went through Catholic ceremonies on what their first meeting was like!!!

    Thanks!

There are a lot of good threads previously. Check out this, that, and finally here. Also check out the catholic boards in general.

Hi Veggiebride! wow, you were me a week ago! Fi and i met with a priest for an "interview" (as he called it) just last Saturday. We are having the wedding in an area we currently do not live in (we are living in pittsburgh, wedding back home in chi-area ) so therefore we are not parishioners , which was a concern of mine. I too have heard various horror stories of the first interview... my sister told me they had to take a test the minute they walked in, about children, their faith, finances, politics..the works!

Heres a quick recap of our meeting :

We sat down, he asked us how we met. He then asked us if we were both Catholic and why individually it was important for us to be married in a Catholic church. Then asked when we'd like to have the wedding... after that he said " well i see no reason why we shouldn't proceed with the ceremony plans (!!!)" Then we talked about Pre-Cana meetings and the FOOCUS test.

i was beyond relieved and grateful how our meeting went! We live together and he didn't even touch on that at all. I think it just depends on the priest you are meeting with because ours seems very laidback and "modern", if you will. Please try to stay calm and not get too nervous, take a deep breath and walk in the room with your FI and remember its a meeting..a discussion. I think i got hung up on the "interview" word too much and that freaked me out more! Good luck and let us know how it went! ((( HUGS ))) It'll go great! :)

He will probably ask you for personal information (name, birthday, baptism, confirmation, what church you belong to, parents names, and your address). So you will probably have to come clean with the fact that you live together. He may tell you why the Church believes you should not be living together, and he might ask you to live apart.

He'll likely go over the requirements for marriage in the Church and ask you some questions about that to determine if you will meet the requirements (like are you Catholic, do you intend to raise you children Catholic, do you have a drug problem, have you been married before, etc). Some of the meeting will probably be with both of you, but he might also do some of it one-on-one.

I've met with multiple priests and have been having regular meetings, and I'm actually enjoying it. The thing to remember is that priests are people too :)
