I would think family style would be cheaper and that would be what I would want. I would ask what the prices are obviously and if theres a big difference between the two find out why and decide which is more suited to you and your FH and to your event.

Definitely check with the caterer to find out if plated is actually more expensive than family style. In many places it is, *BUT* our caterers told us that that they had to charge more pp for buffet/family style than for plated dinners, because plated allowed them to have better control over portion sizes (and thus food costs) while with buffet/family style meals, they found that people take a lot bigger helpings (and, incidentally, end up wasting a lot of food). So, it’s not an automatic rule of thumb.
