Anyone else picked Memorial Day weekend or am I the only crazy one? haha
@MrsB-to-Be: Hi date twin! There was no question in mind, I always knew it'd be that weekend bc that's when we started dating :)
Me too! I hadn't seen too many bees with our date. It was kind of the only weekend we could do it but I think it will be nice to give people an extra travel day. I also like the fact that our anniversary will usually be around Memorial Day so it makes it easy to go on a weekend trip.
@peachplum09: Oh that's so cute!! We started dating in September and we'd like to do a fall wedding actually but we both teach and we don't want to get married in the middle of the school year haha
@Natalieh86: I liked the idea of the extra travel day for everyone too!!
So has anyone come across things costing more since it's Memorial Day? So far I haven't, but I've only booked the venue.
@Natalieh86: I haven't either, we booked venue and photographer so far.
I'm planning on a Memorial Day wedding too! We're hoping to do Sunday May 27, since the Monday holiday will give people a day to recover. We have a lot of OOT guests, so I think a holiday weekend is the best option.
We chose the Sunday, May 27th day as well. The 10% discount on the reception venue doesn't hurt either. So far I have not come across any price increases except for the hotel rooms. Sorry guests but the lowest our room block could go is $259/night. Eek.
We are actually getting married on the Friday night (May 25th) of Memorial Day Weekend. We are having a smaller wedding, and the minimum guests were too high on Saturday. I was a little worried about the Friday night, but in surveying my guests it seems like we are good to go! Anyone else on Friday night?
I picked Saturday the 26th without even realizing it was Memorial Day weekend! But it works out great! :)
@NoMoreStew: Yeah my choice of date was kind of by default . . but I think it's going to work out well! And hopefully it's easy for people to remember!
OMG!! @peachplum09: That is why we picked May 26th also! We have been dating since high school so I have been waiting for that date to be on a Saturday for 5 years! Hence the two and a half year engagement....
Hi Nay brides! I am getting married Memorial Day Weekend / May 26th. Family and friends are spread out so we figured a long weekend gave people more time and less stress. I am glad to see that I am not alone in planning early too!
I don't think it is possible to plan to early for a memorial day weekend wedding. Brides are crazy and EVERYONE wants May! I think it may be the ONLY holiday weekend that we didn't receive a discount on....
I don't think it will be that crazy either. Prob what was crazier was a friend of mine who got married the day before the Chicago Marathon, which I ran in! 45,000 runners, plus all their friends and families meant no hotels, no cabs, no restaurants available. It was crazy! The streets looked like NYC all day long. Memorial Day is just a picnic compared to that!
Date twin here! :) I already have the church and the venue. Dates in D.C. fill up pretty quick, so we were lucky with getting the church last month!! Now just hoping it’s not too crazy that weekend…
Hi date twins! We were going to originally go with a June date, but we are doing a DW wedding and since everyone is coming from out of town, I wanted to do it on a holiday weekend to give people an extra day off. Plus, like someone else mentioned, it will be nice to always have a 3-day weekend on anniversaries!
Memorial Day Weekend makes everything much more expensive & hotels can sell out. I got married last year & we came back from our honeymoon on Memorial Day Weekend. All room rates were higher than usual. Some hotels were full. Plane flight prices doubled for that weekend. There was a TON of traffic too, it was kinda crazy.
Not to discourage you, just book early & be prepared to pay over normal full price PLUS dealing with a LOT of traffic!
We picked Sunday, May 27th! Our wedding is almost all out-of-towners, so we wanted to give them a day to travel both before and after our wedding.
Most places offer a discount on venues on Sunday, but many places also jack up the prices because it's a holiday weekend. We are looking at paying the Saturday price for the Sunday of a holiday weekend.
I've done some calling around for hotels and didn't come across any jacked up rates. I'm sure in bigger cities it's more of an issue though. The one hotel is normally like $220/night and they said they could do $179 for a block.
I'm a May 26th bride too, but since Im in Canada our long weekend is the week before!
We actually got a discounted rate for both the per plate and the hotel rates. Significantly cheaper than other holidays. The day after, Sunday the 27th, went up in price by $10 pp though. Which is odd!
Hey girls - another Sunday the 27th bride here... So excited that it's less than a year away now! With all we've done so far, I haven't really ran into any problems with increased holiday weekend pricing. But on the other hand, a lot of people told me I'd be able to get Sunday discounts, and I definitely haven't seen those either since it is a 3-day weekend... Anyways, just thought I'd say hi! Happy planning! :)
Also - @toshella: it looks like we're date AND location twins! So fun!!
Where are you guys getting married?!
I’m *new* to the May 26, 2012 date (originally planning for May 19, which the newly released college calendar put smack dab in the middle of finals week). Hoping to save my sanity by avoiding getting married during finals, we decided to move the date back.
Afterwards I noticed it was Memorial Day weekend, which means great future anniversary trips and it much closer to our Honeymoon on June 3.
Sorry girls... I started the thread and haven't checked back haha. We haven't run into anything being more expensive yet so that's been a good thing. We're getting married in my hometown which is SMALL (which may help with the hotel costs) Most of our vendors are from Knoxville though but we haven't had any real sticker shock.
@NoMoreStew: I picked it without realizing it's memorial day weekend too!
We picked it because we wanted to do our civil ceremony at city hall on May 23, our dating anniversary, and then we just picked the Saturday after for our reception!
We are getting married on May 27th. It wasn't planned that way, but we fell in love with a venue and if we had the wedding on a holiday weekend, we didn't have to meet the 300 people minimum requirement. We wanted saturday May 26th but that was already booked, so we grabbed May 27th. Can't wait. I haven't looked into any hotels yet, guess I should do that soon. there is way too much to do!
WOW! Look at all of these Memorial Day Weekend TWINS!!!!
Hi Ladies,
I was married this year during Memorial Day Weekend. I popped into this thread because I totally miss planning!! Just wanted to wish you all the best - it is a BEAUTIFUL weekend to get married! Best of luck to you all!
Military wedding! May 26th date. Best bet to get all of our groomsmen there! :)
We had our Memorial Day or this year and it was no problem. Only one person complained (uncle who's always yammering, lol). I don't think it was an issue for anyone.
Good luck ladies :) hope all your days are lovely
We have actual memorial day. But I have to check with his family first. And then check with our location. As it's at the baseball field. I want make sure it isn't booked DURING a game.
