I'm planning to create my own menu cards and have a dilemma.  Guests will be selecting their main entree from a selection of 3 items (probably chicken or fish or vegetarian).  we're also having a kids menu since we're going to have alot of them at the reception.

since i'm only planning to do place cards and having them pick their own seat once we get to the table, how do i do the menu card? i was planning to tucking them into their napkins but since I don't know where the individual guest will be sitting at that table, I don't know who'll be getting what!

    Help!

If they are choosing that night you could just put all of the choices on there with the words "Your choice of".

Here is sort of an example: http://www.grottohouston.com/pdf/ddd_gr.pdf

Our guests has the option of four entrees, and on the menu card, we used the "choice of" phrase and listed everything. I think that's pretty standard, so you won't run into people not getting it :)

    Miss Chapstick, good point!

Since they'll be pre-selecting their main entree from their RSVP (which, by the way, I'll be doing a completely online RSVP) - I'm thinking of saying "Pre-selected choice of..."  I'm just a bit worried that the wording "Choice of..." would imply that they can tell their server what they want??  Or do most wedding guests know the etiquette that they can't change the meal they've already selected a while ago?

Lampshade127: they're pre-selecting the entree when the do their online RSVP.

    thanks for the suggestions!!

Our guests had to pre-select their entrees as well. I asked our venue about that because I know some venues will ask that you identify each seat with the meal preference by a color-coded sticker on their place card or something. But ours said that they prepare for people switching their preference by making a few extra of each entree, and they've never had problems. They said that they'll occasionally run into this problem at events, but when it happens, only a handful of guests do it, and they're always covered.

I think "choice of" is fine because most guests know that they've already selected theirs when they RSVP'd. If it makes you feel better to say, "pre-selected choice of," I don't see anything wrong with that, either :)

I would definitely ask your venue about how they like to handle that, though.

I went to a wedding where everyone got to pick cards that were the shape of their entree. I had the seafood dish, so I got a little fish and put it on my plate. Later on the waiter came around and picked up the shapes and knew what to bring everyone. That way, it was very clear that we could not change our mind and it was also helpful to the waiter. Plus, it could be a cute/fun way to add some extra decoration to the table!

Alternately, is there a way to indicate on the placecard who ordered what dish?

@curlydreamer: That's a cute idea! If a venue wants to indicate meal preferences at each seat, I think the most common is to put a sticker on the placecards, and different colors mean certain meal preferences (i.e. blue for beef, yellow for chicken, etc.).

Then there are venues like mine that just prepare extra and didn't need to know who exactly ordered what. My sister works in the "special events" industry as wait staff, and she said it's always best to check with the venue what they prefer.

You could also do a different colored placecard for each meal choice. Say your colors are red and blue....guest eating chicken gets red, guests eating beef get blue...
