So FMIL sort of yelled at me this weekend over our (very tentative) menu.  We are doing a plated dinner and are as of now planning on offering: (1) "new york strip steak with Jack Daniels demi glace", (2) "maple glazed niman ranch pork loin with pecan compote" and (3) "sweet potato souffle with local roasted vegetables."  The way we picked is that I picked a meal I would want (steak, yay red meat!) and FI picked a meal he would want (pork) and since we will have 10-15 vegetarian/kosher guests we are providing a veggie option.  According to FMIL no one would like the pork and we HAVE to serve fish.  Now, I have nothing against fish but the option for us is salmon and we just weren't that psyched about it.  Is it true that no one would want pork? Should we change the menu? Would you or your SO ever choose pork with these options? Would you choose fish as your option if that was subbed in for pork?

I strongly dislike pork in any form but I would never use my eating preferences to gauge those of guests (I'm super picky)! For whatever its worth I don't like any type of seafood either. And I don't eat beef often enough for my tummy to easily digest it. I'm all for chicken!

Since you are offering a vegetarian option I wouldn't worry about not offering the fish.

I don't get what she's upset about.  If people don't want pork, then they can have the steak or sweet potato souffle.  I think more people like pork than fish IMO. (Although I LOVE fish!)

And yes, FI would pick the pork but I would have steak ;o)

I would choose the pork!! That sounds delicious and your FMIL sounds craaazy!!

I love fish too, but I think your menu SHOULD reflect your tastes!  I think people will be just fine with it!!

If those are the meals you want, I say go for them. You have a veggie option which is what is important.

I would have picked the fish over the pork, but honestly, I wouldn't have cared because I had two other options! The veggie one sounds so yummy :)

Dude...you are offering steak AND a vegetarian dish. Your FMIL is being silly. I think pork is probably more popular than fish...well in our area anyways. I'm always scared of fish at weddings--it has to be cooked perfectly or I can't do it.

I would leave it. If your SO wants pork, have pork! My SO LOVES pork. Loves it. Almost as much as steak....

I'm one of the people who would normally order fish, if it is offered, but I would just order the souffle. Not a big deal at all. My FI would probably order the pork.

I think that you should keep it as it is. If no one else eats the food, you and FI will and it's your day anyway.

I love pork! It's pretty much my favorite thing ever and I would totally pick it over some smelly fish.

We're having pork as one of our options!  And we're psyched about it!!  I have no idea why your FMIL thinks everyone hates pork and likes fish, but I have no reason to believe that's true.  If it were me, I'd have the steak, because I heart steak, but I would be tempted by the pork as well.  It all sounds delish!

No, but that's because we're veggies, and I just want to say I love your veggie option - if pork is what you want, then go for it! It's your wedding.

I think you menu sounds great. I know plenty of people who love pork, and if people don't they have another option. I would keep your menu as is.

I am usually a little scared of "wedding fish" - I usually don't choose it, because it does not do well in a "keep warm" setting - it usually dries out!

I think you should keep the beef, pork and veggie options as is! Your FMIL is being a nut!

i LOVE salmon and always choose the fish at weddings.. but that pork dish sounds really good and i know a hell of a lot more people that eat pork than fish. (my fiance HATES fish). I love your options and its refreshing to see something different!

Thanks ladies! I won't be offended if fewer people eat pork ;) The way she was talking, I was starting to think it was a weird food.  We eat it at home all the time so we didn't think it seemed out of the box.

@ the pork over fish people: where are the fine dining pork restaurants then? Tongue out

But whatever the preference of pork v. fish, you are offering plenty of options. I should have added above, let her know that the menu reflects you and your FI and offers a good range of options. End of story.

That sounds like a delicious menu, though I personally don't like pork and many of our guests don't eat it because they're Jewish.

I don't think asking us whether we'd eat it or not is terribly helpful though, as we are not the guests at your wedding. I know you can't interview all of them, but hopefully you can get an idea of what family and close friends prefer and base your decision on that.

@monitajb: have you been to Incanto in San Francisco?  They do a lot of pork.  Sadly for me, since I'm vegetarian, but my friends tell me it's delicious.

I'm with your FI! I would totally pick the pork! My husband might, but he's a steak guy for weddings usually. I think that there are 2 other great options for those who don't eat pork and you're fine with what you want. Not to mention, it's your FI who is the one wants the pork, so maybe she should take up his dinner choice with him and not you!

I do not eat pork, in any form. I hate it intensely. That said.... I would go pork over fish. I hate fish even more! BUT, in that situation, I would just eat steak. I love me some steak.

She's being silly. Just go with what you've got.

out of all of those, the sweet potato option sounded the most delish! i'm not a vegetarian. I don't know what her deal is w/ the pork, though. It's pretty common for most people. We don't cook it, but we will eat it! the only thing i will add about that though is that the texture of your pork and the texture of your steak are pretty similar. Maybe that has something to do with her viewpoint?

Anyway, thanks for making me hungry at 4:48 ;)

@GirlWithARing: That's a good point, since we still have time I might try to do a straw poll of my friends and the wedding party to see what they would prefer.

@ historienne. No, I haven't, though if there is a pork fine dining restaurant, FI will for sure want to go. I'm always taking him to fish restaurants (of which there are many Tongue out (I'm totally just being silly about this)), but he adores pork.

Come to think of it, a pork reastaurant could really be brilliant. FI and are looking for a local investment....

You people who wouldn't eat pork are CRAZY. Although being of Puerto Rican descent makes me a little biased since it's pretty much the national dish. I say up with pork!!

I would most likely choose pork over fish, and I would absolutely choose pork over salmon.  I think your FMIL is crazy, just because fish and meat are traditional options, doesn't mean you have to have those options at your wedding.

I am actually thinking of picking a pork myself. I like it lots and would probably pick it over chicken. I think so long as you are having three options, pork is OK. However, if you were just doing two, then I would go red meat and a fish.

I think you are offering plenty and this is from a person who is 1. allergic to fish and 2. does not eat pork.  You have a beef and vegetarian option, I personally never complain because I don't expect people to go out of their way to accomadate me, If there isn't a meat that I can eat I just eat the side dishes with the understanding that I'm an adult who is perfectly capable of feeding myself later if I'm still hungry.  Keep the options you have sounds like they would please both you and your fiance and appeal to a variety of guest.

If there was a fish I would definitely get that, if not I would go for the veggie. I personally find meat too heavy if I'm going to be dancing all night. On th other hand FI would for sure get the beef. My only advice is to think of your audience- i'm from New England, so we have to have fish at our wedding...
