I havent heard of a fishtail, my guess is it’s like a trumpet?

Mermaid tends to be tighter fitting dress that has a fairly dramatic flare/bell at the bottom.

Trumpet (fishtail?) – Is usually still fitted and slim but it’s a less dramatic, softer flare out at the bottom.

sfp:  Yea fishtail is really just another word for trumpet, its a more gradual flair where as a mermaid style is quite fitted down to the knee and then flairs out quite dramatically from there!

I was confused about this concept at first too but i’ve always known I loved the dramatic mermaid look and that’s what I went for, I love it, can’t wait to wear it!

There’s also fit and flare to make it more confusing – here’s a good breakdown!

sfp:  Happy to help! 🙂

Haha yea it is definitely a little more restrictive but there’s generally a little give around the knees and i’ve also got a hoop underneath to keep the skirt away from my feet! It’s not the MOST comfortable style, but dress designers are pretty clever, they make it work somehow! I was prepared to sacrifice a little comfort for this style because I love it so much lol

Yea fit and flare and trumpet are a great compromise and suit certain body shapes better, its also a slightly more demure look if you don’t want that really dramatic shape – I think its a great mix between classic and modern and will be timeless when you look back on pics in years to come 😉

My recommendation would be that with any of these styles, get a hoop! I tried all the dresses I was looking at on with and without one and it made a world of difference! it just frees up so much space down there! it does make the bottom of the skirt sit out a tiny bit more but my skirt is quite dramatic anyway so it wasn’t very noticable!

Enjoy your shopping experience! It can be exhausting but lots of fun!
