Just got back from our honeymoon in Excellence Playa Mujeres – just north of Cancun.  It was awesome and there was no oil anywhere close to us.  Of course there’s a big tropical storm brewing down there now so I’d avoid hurricane season if you can!

We LOVED Excellence Playa Mujeres and highly recommend that resort.  The service was unbelieveable and the food was AWESOME!  We went to a Sandals resort last year and loved it… until we got to Excellence.  Excellence blew Sandals out of the water.

We can’t recommend Excellence enough.   We loved everything about it and would go back in a heartbeat.  We booked direct through their 800 number on the website and then a week before the trip, I noticed they were offering special pricing on their site so I called back and got the new rate, saving us $600 off of our 9-day stay.  We were referred there by a friend and it so lived up to the recommendation.  We had a swim-up room which was fantastic but we did NOT do the Excellence Club bit.  Most people we talked to down there and everything we read beforehand said that it was not worth the added expense and we never felt like we missed out on anything.  We only left the resort one day to go snorkeling and in hindsight, we probably shouldn’t have done that.  The resort is north of all the Cancun “strip” and we really liked that.  We did not want to be in the mix of hotel after hotel and Hooters, TGIFridays, Bubba Gump’s, etc.  It was perfect to be secluded.  And the activities offered by the resort were really fun.

Oh – and we recommend booking directly with Cancun Transfers for your transportation to/from the airport.  We read about them on Trip Advisor and sure enough, they were reliable and HALF the price of the service to which the hotel referred us.  In fact, whatever resort you end up choosing, I’d recomment Cancun Transfers if they don’t provide airport transportation like Excellence does not.

Hope this was helpful.  Enjoy!

The oil spill hasn’t really spread beyond the Louisiana area.  That doesn’t mean that it won’t by January.  It is currently the beginning of hurricane season, which I imagine will make the waters choppier and the oil does have a chance of getting into the right currents to send it all around the gulf.  Yes, it would head towards Florida first, but the water doesn’t stop there.  It goes around Florida and then up the eastern seaboard. There is no way to know where the oil will be, but I think you will be ok in Cancun.  Cancun is on the right side of the Yucatan Peninsula, sort of away from the Gulf’s currents.  See that island on the right? I think that is Cozumel, and Cancun is just north of there.

Mexico has not been effected by the spill. And I second the recommendations for Excellence Playa Mujeres. It’s a fantastic resort!!

I don’t know that you can book the air and hotel directly with the resort. Whatever you do, please don’t forgo the travel insurance.

If the Excellence Playa Mujeres is on the Isla Mujeres, we just got back from honeymooning there, literally, two weeks ago… well, not Excellence, but the Hotel Villa Rolandi.  It was spectacular; no oil spill, just the most extraordinary, National Geographic sunsets night after night I have ever seen (and I have travelled extensively).  May I also recommend this hotel (perfect for a honeymoon; every room is a suite, huge, each with its private deck and private hot tub for two overlooking the sea! unbelievable.  room service.  You can get half-board, which means a full breakfast (which comes with the room anyway) and an amazing dinner (their restaurant sits on the water on some pilings and coral reef and we didn’t want to eat any place else; what can be bad about lobster cocktail and huge shrimp in green sauce for dinner? The place is so amazing that Tony Blair rented the whole hotel (maybe 30 rooms tops in the whole place) for his entire family/entourage once! just thought I’d pass this one along…
