I'm not sure if you're aware of this -but 'cumbia' style of song/dance is more fast paced. Does he want something in Spanish? Why doens't he go for a 'bolero' song-a little something more romantic. If he's set on 'cumbia'. i would suggest taking dance lessons as well
I just learned that I got his style of dance wrong. He likes something called "sapatiado" - hopefully I spelled that right. The stuff I hear him listen to is kind of fast paced I think, and I have no clue how to dance to any Mexican music, not even traditional salsa.
Oh man, I didn't even think about learning to dance to his music! I'm screwed!
I think it would be fun to switch from slow and romantic to quick and exciting. But I agree you'd have to really coordinate that together.
I will get back to you on Spanish songs. I'm texting my cousin. She has two or three that she likes and wants to use.
bachata is awesome for romantic and very easy to do! The music is beautiful and the step/style is simple. Check out the band Aventura!
Eres is quite possibly the most perfect wedding dance. I looooooove that song. Find the lyrics and have your fi translate you will love the lyrics.
Actually I like Aventura and the bachata style quite a bit. I bought Aventura's latest CD a few months ago just before they started taking over the radio!
"Eres" sounds like a very nice song. However it doesn't sound like the style I hear my FI listen to. I'll have to ask him exactly how to spell "sapatiado" and maybe get some examples of bands he likes to get the search started.
Haha I'm so lost!
I'm Cuban and we're using "Quizas" by Ibrahim Ferrer :o) It's a beautiful song with many renditions.
Okay I found the websites of the two radio stations he listens to, and one of them had a top 20 list on it. Some of these sound like my FI's music! Yay!
Here are a few links... ok well here are a lot of links. :) Can anyone tell me please what style of music this is?

Ha! Jen, that's Banda! You will definitely need to learn how to dance La Quebadrita for that... direct translation...the breaking dance because your partner tosses you and bends you back to the point of breaking your back..lol
Not the most romantic songs but a ton of fun to jump around to even if you don't have any pro moves.
Well if he likes Vicente Fernandez, why not try Hermoso Cariño or Te Presumo by Banda El Recodo. My 3rd recommendation doesn't fall within the music that he likes but it doesn't hurt, it's a song called-Tu de que vas by Franco de Vita. They are all slow dances so no dance lessons would be needed. If I can think of more I'll let you know.
I don't know much about Spanish/Mexican music but I know that I really like Shakira and Juanes.
That's banda, but I think that's too fast for a first dance. He might like songs by Camila, Reyli or Sin Bandera
Wow you guys, these are really awesome suggestions! I'm going to bring them up with my FI and see what he thinks. :) :)
I know I might be a little late to jump on this wagon. I am in the same situation as you!!! I want to pick both an english and spanish song for our first dance. My FI is also clueless to what he wants. I love this song and have since it came out... just a suggestion. Its nice, (in spanish) and slow. I'm planning to save all the banda, cumbia, bachata, etc. for when the guests come and get dance lessons from me and the honey... lol.
Although, I would say if you havent considered Intoccable, they have a lot of nice songs - tejano style, but slow enough that you could have it for a first dance. Otherwise something by vincente fernandez, juanes, jennifer pena, Selena, you have a lot of options. Did he give you any feedback yet :)
hi, just wondering if you ever figured the song choice out....btw its, zapatiado with a "z" very popular in the area of Mexico we are from...good luck!
hey jen you should also try Hasta mi final by el trono de mexico thats what me and my FI are going to use for our first dance... i just dont know what song to use for father daughter dance song i want it to be in spanish but not so slow and boring anyone have any suggestions???
my fiance is mexican and i'm american. we picked "bedita tu luz" by mana. beautiful song and lyrics
Sorry I didn't realize I had more replies to this thread! Yes, my FI told me "zapatiado" is his style of music, not banda... although he seems to appreciate banda too.
@Msaucedo & @melissadsykes those are both really good songs too!
I asked FI about it, and he said he picked his song already. It's called "Par de Anillos" by Viento y Sol. Now we just have to figure out how the DJ will transition from my song to his for a two-part first dance hehe.
Thanks again for everyone's help!

I'm American and my FI is Mexican. We plan to pick two songs for our first dance - start with mine and then "fade" into his - and still keep it under 4 minutes. I want to start with "Everything I Do, I Do it For You" by Bryan Adams. He can't seem to find anything he wants though. His style of music is called Cumbia (I think). Does anyone know some good first dance songs for his half?
Sorry if this is a really open-ended question!!!
