I stayed on a very fancy resort in Mexico and it was completely safe.
We've stayed at 5 star all inclusives for several years. If you go off the property for a tour or something, they check your bracelet when you come back, before you are accepted back on the property. We've never had a problem.
@pinktulips2012: hi date twin. if you stay on the resort, you should have no problems. even going out during the day, take a taxi arranged by the front desk and have the same taxi pick you up at a certain time. when you are off the resort, don't 'look' like a tourist; act like you know what you are doing and where you are going.
some areas in mexico are much safer than others. i have personally travelled by car through nearly half of mexico and the yucatan and it's a beautiful country. you just have to be a 'smart traveller'. i now live in mexico about 3 hours from cancun in one of the safest cities in the country. i feel safer here out at night than i would walking downtown toronto at night.
where are you honeymooning? which resort?
I think the most important question is WHERE you are going in Mexico. FI and I went to the Riviera Maya this past August, and felt VERY safe, on and off the resort. We did a bunch of day excursions off the resort, and every resort is VERY particular about who can/can not come into the gated resort. We even took a cab in playa del carmen, which we were a little nervous about, but it turned out great. I would not be nervous about it at all!
Of course there are some unsafe areas, but you won't be wandering in the hillside right? ...right? There's a lot of insecurity but it's limited to certain areas and believe me there are nowhere near to where you might be planning to visit. Tourist areas are extremely safe and even if they weren't most of the time tourist don't leave resorts.
I know there's a lot of concern about security in mexico, but really american press takes it to another ridiculous level.
I think it depends where you are going. Regardless, if you stay on a resort the whole time it should be safe.
This website gets updated letting you know what is not safe.
thanks for the feedback ladies
I am staying at the Now Sapphire 45 min outside of Cancun
We went to Playa del Carmen in May and felt safe the entire time there.
DH and I spent 10 days in Cozumel and Cancun in November and a bunch of my family went to Playa Del Carmon after Christmas. Never felt unsafe at all!
The border towns are really where the big concerns are, not the tourist areas. Obviuosly, like anywhere, be aware of your surroundings and don't go too far off the beaten path. But I have zero concerns with travelling to Mexico.
The resorts are absolutely safe. Theyre very diligent about checking all incoming traffic as well. Most of the issue is in the bigger cities where the cartel violence is happening not on the resort areas.
My FI and I are going to Mexico for our honeymoon. My aunt is a travel agent and we talked to her about the safety factor and she said that while there are travel warnings against Mexico right now, NONE of them cover the area around Cancun, Playa del Carmen or Cozumel area. They are all further inside the country where the drug cartels are problems. You can read more about the warnings ion the state department website here: http://travel.state.gov/travel/cis_pa_tw/tw/tw_5665.html
Hope that helps!
I was just in Cabo in September 2011 & November 2010 and traveled around town in a taxi by myself. Felt completely safe!!
We're leaving for Mexico on Sunday for our honeymoon... highly recommend it. The people are incredibly friendly. Honestly. Just keep your wits about you as you would in any big city ... and you'll be fine.
We LOVE Mexico lol. There are parts I wouldn't go to, like the border towns, but the main tourist areas are very safe; the main risks are the usual things like petty theft which happen EVERYWHERE, and it's just a case of being sensible.
We've been to Cancun/the Riviera Maya 3 years running and LOVE it; we're super gutted we can't afford to go back this year (going to the Dom Re instead, which is lovely, but not the same). We go off-resort all the time and have never had any issues, or felt remotely unsafe (and I happily wander about with nice jewellery on, and my DLSR).
Just be sensible :-)
Playa Del Carmen and the surrounding areas are safer than most US cities and has a lower murder rate than Toronto Canada.
Don't buy drugs, or wander around residential neighborhoods, and you'll be JUST as safe as you would be anywhere else :)
Its a beautiful area with amazing food and wonderful people - one of my favorite places on earth. Enjoy!!!
I cant wait for my H-moon to Cancun! Im not concerned at all about crime. Its not like drug cartels are rushing resorts murdering people left and right. In fact, they probably have a HUGE stake in keeping hte tourist areas safe since they likely own some of them. Why scare off business??
