I just wanted to add my oppinion. I just got back from Cancun. We were nervous about the recent happenings and decided to stay mostly on the resort. However we did go out (only to tourist areas) a day or two. I've been there for the past 8 years and everything seems the same, except added military and police patrol.
I think it's okay to visit Mexico in the tourist areas like Cancun, but!..
As with anywhere you go: make sure you are with someone else at all times (groups of people is preferred of course); be aware of your surroundings; and make wise decisions (don't travel out of the tourist area, don't wander off by yourself, and don't talk to strangers!).
That being said, if we didn't have a timeshare there we probably would have avoided it just because of all the news hype. However, there is crime anywhere you go, just be safe and use common sense.
We have been debating between St. Lucia and Cabo. We REALLY want to go to St. Lucia but our wedding is in August which means not taking a honeymoon right away after our honeymoon (which we REALLY WANT TO DO) due to Hurricane season. The other option would be Mexico but I have become horrified with things that have been happening in Mexico... decapitaed bodies in Tijuana - the murder rate is rising so quickly. I just don't wang to have that dooming over my head... I would warn everyone to do the same!!! BE SAFE!

I was recently sent an email by my state college urging students NOT to travel to Mexico for spring break, as the crime rates have significantly risen in the past few months. I thought I would share this annoucement to those planning on traveling to Mexico in the near future.
As a warning to all those Mexico honeymooners out there, maybe you should read this article. If staying in a high touristy area, I wouldn't be too concerned, but you should still be informed of what is currently going on. Hope this helps!
