Of course it had nothing to do with his smoking…even while going through treatment. *eyeroll*

@nl:  I don’t know much, but I have heard of this.  I assume it’s like cervical cancer, certain strains of the virus increase your risk of throat cancer, but not every strain does.  It seems to be less common than the cervical cancer risk, but I think it’s also more recently discovered.

HPV’s for sure associated with Cervical cancer.  I have heard that HPV’s suspected to be associated with oral and rectal cancers, but am not sure if there’s been any conclusive evidence to truly correlate them.  It wouldn’t surprise me if there was something to this, since cancers can have various causes, including viruses.  Now, Michael Douglas doesn’t have a medical degree, and many celebrities spout nonscientific nonsense, so who knows whether or not this was truly the cause or at least a factor.  I DO hope that his claims spark some discussion on oral protection, at least, since oral sex is often unprotected and people do contract diseases and infections (including HPV) that way.

I have a question that maybe a health care bee would know.  Can HPV be transferred just by kissing?  If not, can you explain why?

@nl:  I don’t know much about that, to be honest.  The good news is that not all HPV is known to cause cancer.  You’re best off just asking your doctor.
