Could be for gratuity? I know our caterers (Michigan Union) included gratuity in their estimate/final charges and I think that it may have been for 18%. I would call/email the vendors specifically and ask.
I'm pretty sure that's a gratuity. 18-20% is fairly standard for large parties. I don't recall seeing any other state-mandated "service charge" on my estimate...though now I guess I should double check.
I got married in detroit in may...
the service charge is different than the gratuity. the service charge is for the staff + use of their serving equipment, plates, etc. It varied from 18-20% in my quotes and every single catering quote had it. AND, it's taxable. So, the bill = (your total for food + 18%)+6%

Hey Bees! I'm getting quotes from caterers for my June 2010 wedding, and was wondering if anyone else saw a 18% "service charge" in their bills. Just curious why I only saw this on 1 of my 2 catering estimates.
Thanks!
