I really wanted to keep my middle name. I love the way it sounded with my new last name. Sad that NY couldn't change it for you.
really? that sounds strange....what about after the wedding when you go to the social security office to change your name? was this just with your marriage license that you were asking? i didnt do any name changing with the marriage license, but had no problems at all when i went to social security to change things after the wedding. and once you have a new social security card no other agency can really argue with you.
My middle name was inadvertantly dropped... When I signed my marriage license, I didn't sign it with my middle name (though my middle name is listed on it, I just didnt put it in my signature) so the lady at social security told me she couldn't out it on my social security card. I asked her if that meant I had no middle name now, and she said "no, but just don't fill that part out on a driver license, or if you apply to a bank" etc. Soooo, sounds to me I have no legal middle name...lol I don't like my middle name, but it's a part of me and I really didn't want to totally drop it... but oh well.
In Maryland, your first stop is the Social Security office, and I think they would have let me do anything I wanted. But I love my middle name, and couldn't bear to ditch it.
I had thought of picking up my maiden name as my middle name but when I mentioned this to my Mother, she was upset. Although my middle name has no family importance, she said that they gave me that name special and would be upset if I were to change it. Even if I were to change it to my maiden name--oh well I am just excited to change my last name
I have thought about dropping my middle name and taking my last name as my middle name but my middle name is my mama's first name and my niece has my middle name also...so I wouldn't drop it...
I decided not to change my middle name. I'm not sure exactly what the laws allow, but I think I could have moved my maiden name in as a second middle name. However, you have to hypenate your name so that it only takes up three fields so it would have been like "Jessie Middle-Maiden NewName" which just looked weird to me.
In the state of MA you are able to change your middle name. I plan on changing my middel name to my maiden name.
We're both keeping our last names, but I kind of like the idea of taking each others' last names as new middle names in addition to our given middle names. He's not so crazy about the idea, though, and I don't want to go through the paperwork. So I think we're going to stay as is.
I'm in California...I actually got rid of my middle name from birth and replaced it with my mom's maiden name. Then, I added my maiden as a second middle, and took his last name. Surprisingly, they let me do it!
i am in california, i was able to add a hypen to my middle name and add my last name to it without a problem but i was not able to change my middle name to something else. i believe the only option would have been inserting my new last name, or old last name but nothing else

While reviewing the rules for getting a NY Marriage License, we were saddened to learn that you can't change your middle name with the license- only your surname. This is a pain- I was hoping to take his last name as my new middle name, and he was going to add his last name to his middle name, and take my last name. What's your state like? How did you deal with this issue?
