I get terrible migranes and am very worried about both the wedding day and having a night before rehersal dinner- we don't have one polanned yet. I thought if I relaxed alone the night before and went to bed early, it wouldn't trigger migraine that would carry into my wedding day. When I get a bad one it lasts 72 hours. Does anyone else get migraines and how are you preparing for your wedding day?

I do! I am suffering right now actually!

But I do know my triggers and can usually avoid them. For me, bad lighting, any cola pop, lack of caffeine (i know that's bad) and certain medications trigger my migraines.

Right now it is from my medication which there is not much I can do about! But before the wedding I will ensure there are no triggers around.

    Have you studied your triggers?

I do - red wine and smoke are the worst for me. I think trying to keep away from your triggers and stay as relaxed as possible should help. Stressing about it is just going to raise your chances of getting one.

Have you heard of tiger balm. It's an ointment for pain. I put a lil on my temples when I'm getting a bad headache. You probably don't want to put it on the day of becasue it does have a strong odor, but mayeb the night before

Ugh.  My only triggers are stress and alcohol.  I haven't thought of this before but that's kind of scary - I want to drink! and I'm almost certainly going to be stressed...  Maybe I can be blissed out...

On the plus side adrenaline usually saves me - I've only ever had a migraine for one test and that was because the damn test lasted two days.

i get horrible migraines also (posted about it as well because i was terrified) and i did everything possible to NOT get one: stayed away from my triggers, tried not to stress, drank lots of water, and went to bed early (which was very hard because i was staying in a hotel with my family who was staying up late drinking champage).

my husband and i had a backup plan of what happened if i did get a terrible migraine because if that happened (i get them so bad that i have to either go to the er or take an injection that puts me out) we decided i would just take the shot, push the wedding back a little if needed, not worry about my hair and makeup, and just be very out of it but married and that's what matters.

i ended up getting a migraine- but luckily i was able to work through it. i took LOTS of medication and also my dad got me a massage that morning- which i really recommend it was awesome! i popped pills throughout the day and by the time we were ready for our first look i was good, no pain.

i think all you can do is avoid all your triggers, drink lots of water, don't stress (which i realize is stupid to say b/c you really can't help it, but it's just not worth it to stress), and know what you're going to do if you do get a migraine. have you're meds there at all times. eat because hunger can cause migraines. and if you get one, you get one. it's life. it sucks, but it's the life of us migraine sufferers. don't let it ruin your big day!

I can get them pretty bad, too. I don't know my triggers, though. I usually just wake up with them. At that point I have to crawl on the floor and hope my pain med dull the pain (they've never once made it stop). = ( I really hope I don't get one for my wedding!

Yes -- it is important to know the triggers. Mine are definately stress, some alcohol, bright lights, loud noise, cigar smoke and of course my period. I have tried Tiger Balm and have some in my cabinet. It doesn't make them go away, but I like the tingle. I'll tell you that I did get Botox about 3 months ago to see if it would help. The doc gave me shots in the upper part of my forehead only. For the past 3 months I have not gotten a headache in the "head" like where all my hair on my head is, BUT interestingly, the migranes have "moved" from the head to my temple area. I am thinking of going back to him and see if he can do the entire forehead and if that will stop them completely. Anyone trying Botox for wedding migraines? Oh, yes, and if you are wondering........ it has helped with forehead wrinkle lines!

PS-- Arachna maybe you'd like to make the wedding a night of very little alcohol and save more drinking for your honeymoon? If you are leaving the next day, a migraine on the plane would suck!

I also get horrible migraines, and I was getting them so often that my doctor put me on migraine prevention medicine.  It's called topamax, and it. is. a. miracle.  I've been on it for 6 months, and no migraines.  Before I was on it, I was having a migraine every 10 days, usually lasting 2 days at least.  I'm on the lowest possible dose, as well.  It's literally changed my life.  I think the best thing you can do is talk to your doctor.  Let them know that you're prone to migraines, that it's affecting your life, and that you're especially concerned about having one on your wedding day, or surrounding it.  They can help.  With my insurance, the 60 day supply is $10 (I have the generic version, and I can't remember the name right now).  If you want more info, because there is a little more to it than this, PM me.  Good luck!

@hisbarista. food can be a big migraine trigger. i took a food sensitivity test and cut different foods out of my diet, wheat being a big one, and it's helped a lot. other triggers are usually more obvious and you can feel a migraine coming on right then, like light, noise, chocolate, hunger.

@eastcoast bride. i've been getting botox for 7 years now. it only helps for like one month for me, but that's better than nothing. one thing that i've always noticed is that migraines get worse right after botox before they get better, so you might want to be careful with that and don't get it right before the wedding.

@mrsmdphd. i've also been on topamax for awhile now. a high dose, and it hasn't worked so well for me. i guess everyone's body's are different. and it was a really difficult first month when i got on the drug, the side effects were horrible until i got used to it. i was fatigued, couldn't eat anything. and then i lost a TON of weight to the point where it wasn't healthy. but i've heard it works for a lot of people.

I've been stressing about this part of wedding planning for some time now!! I'm praying that I don't get a migraine on our wedding day! I plan to avoid my triggers (sun, bright lights, soda...) and keep Treximet on me at all times. I love that stuff!

Just wondering what everyone else is doing to now on a daily basis to prevent and treat their migraines. I'm on topamax now. I've taken it in the past, at a high dose and got really sick off the side effects. I ended up at 95lbs and had 7 kidney stones in 2 months and it would cause my face and hands to go numb. But for some stupid stupid reason, my doc wanted to give it another try at a low dose to see if it can stop my migraines.  Right now, I've been back on it for 3 weeks and Ive lost 10lbs already and still havemi graines 4 out of 7 days a week.

I'm not a fan of topamax so I would to hear what everyone else is doing.

Excedrin Migraine! Its the ONLY thing that works! Im taking one the day before the wedding and 2 the day of. I suffer real bad from migrains and I already know all the events will probably trigger one. So I already have that planned out! =)

I have suffered wit migraines for years. And it is only recently that I have gotten them under control. I see your from NJ-there are some wonderful neuro doctors (beregen neuro medical group) or something like that.

I am on TOPMAX (taken everyday) and it has been keeping them away. No I would get migraines 4 days out of the week-so taken a pill 25mgs is wonderful.

I also have TREMEX sp? just incase I get a killer migraine.

Since you still have time-before your wedding I would see about getting into a neuro doctor asap. Won;t want to get one on your special day or honeymoon

I'm bummed to hear that the topamax has been so tough on some of you!  I've experienced no side effects whatsoever.  I think the long and short of it is: talk to your doctor.  There are things you can do to manage migraines, but it can sometimes be a long process of trial and error.  The migraine relief medications--treximet, imitrex, others that I'm forgetting--all made me feel like crap and usually I ended up throwing up and then passing out when I took them.  Not good.  Everyone is different and reacts differently to medication.  The topamax may be your answer, it may be something else that works for you--but a doctor will be the best person to tell you that!  Good luck to everyone dealing with these, they're horrible, I know.

I took Topamax for about three months five years ago. During those three months I had I think one or two migraines, but I got every single horrible side effect possible. I felt pins and needles on my legs and feet, the taste of soda changed, various foods tasted metallic, I started forgetting things, and at one point I spent a whole day feeling like I was living in slow motion (not recommended when you have to commute to work on the DC beltway). Needless to say, I stopped taking Topamax rather quickly.

Since then I've been on lots of different medications to prevent migraines, because the neurologist I was seeing had an approach that was basically "let's throw drugs at her and see what sticks". They all worked fine for a few months and then they stop working and I went back to getting ~10 migraines a month. My new neurologist took me off the most recent preventive I was taking and suggested some natural supplements that have been clinically proven to decrease migraine frequencies. He told me to try each one for a month and then determine which one works better -- butterbur, CoQ10, magnesium, and riboflavin. I started with butterbur but I can't stand it because honestly even in pill form it smells and tastes like grass and it makes me nauseous. I'm going to start with riboflavin this weekend and see what happens.

As for migraine abortives, I've been on imitrex (about 10-15 years ago), maxalt, axert, and now I'm on relpax, which so far is the one with the least side effects. Excedrin Migraine does nothing for me.

For the wedding I tried my best to avoid the triggers, particularly alcohol. And even with that, I did eventually get a migraine, which oddly enough started off as a regular headache during the reception and then turned into a migraine after the party was over and my husband and I were in our hotel room (my migraines almost never start as regular headaches; I must have subconsciously willed the migraine to wait for the reception to be over or something).

My new neurologist also mentioned to me that he can perform a 'nerve blocking' treatment, which is kinda like accupuncture on the head and scalp, and that his patients have reported to him that the treatment leaves them migraine-free for up to three weeks at a time. I didn't opt for trying this before the wedding because I'm afraid of needles, but I would kill for three weeks of migraine-free bliss, so lately I've been thinking that I'm going to check if my insurance covers this treatment and if it does I'm going to suck up my fear of needles and try it...

@azula: I had some major problems with Topomax too.  I started to forget the names of people that I had know half my life, forgot to go to classes, and barely scraped a C in Chemistry (my only C ever).  Topomax is evil!

@ MissAsB -- Oh, I totally agree! The first week was wonderful because I had no migraines at all and I thought it would all be better from then on, but once the side-effects started? Yeah, not so fun anymore. It really is extremely frustrating to forget names and facts you use daily!

To east coast bride -- see a neurologist, if possible one that specializes in headaches. You may not find a good match immediately (I'm on my third neurologist by now), but it's best to have a doctor guiding you through the trial-and-error of migraine prevention. You still have a few months before your wedding, so you have time to try out some medications or supplements. And definitely try to avoid the triggers once the wedding day comes around!

I second the Excedrin Migraine! Also, try seeing a chiropractor in the week leading up to the wedding. My chiro is the only thing that keeps me alive when I get migraines! Also, a cold face mask (the gel kind you put in the fridge) and heat on your neck. Massaging your temples and along eyebrows. You could even try accupuncture, it works wonders!

My dr put me on Darvocette as needed for the pain- pretty much it just puts me to sleep. Funny you mentioned this though, I woke up at 6am this morning with a horrid one, luckily the boy was there to drug me up, close the window and shades and rub my head to help me fall asleep.... not sure what brought this one on though, but my advice is just to have your routine cure ready, avoid as much stress as you can the days leading up to the wedding, and make sure your hubby will be around to comfort you asap if it does show up. maybe talk to your doctor about getting some pain killers that would help you get through the day without knocking you out? And see what works if you have another one before the wedding...

I'm really sorry you have to deal with them too- they are such a bummer, and it's really rough when they last multiple days! UGH... I feel so lucky to only get those 3 day pain fests every so often.

I am also on Topamax, the generic version though (Topiramate).  I used to get the bad soda taste, weight loss, and tingly feelings.  I have been on it for a year now, but after a while the side effects went a way, for the most part.  Every now and then I get the tingle feeling in my hands and feet, but usually isn't bothersome as it doesn't last long.  This medication has worked wonders for me.  I used to have awful migraines least 3-4 days a week, and when I didn't have a migraine, I had horrible tension headaches.  Now, I hardly ever have any issues.  I am also on the lowest dose taken twice daily.  Another thing that helped a good bit before I went on this was the chiropractor.  Knowing your triggers helps alot too!

Hang in there, I know it sucks but hopefully you'll find something that works for you soon!

I get horrible cluster migraines my clusters can last up to two weeks! I am not sure of my exact triggers but try to avoid stress as that seems to make them worse too (or else they make my stress worse) I used to be so worried about triggering them I avoided a lot of things that I had normally done. I have medication that I am able to take once one starts to make it not as bad and then stronger if it hits before I get the other medication. The only problem is the one that is taken earlier needs to be taken every 2 hours and makes me sooooo loopy/tired. I am afraid that I have been doing good it may all hit me this last week before the wedding. I am avoiding all stress and getting as much done now before people are here so I can relax a little more. Other than that I am avoiding dairy, chocolate, & peanut butter.

I seem to have a love/hate relationship with the topamax. When I took it in the past, it did work to make my migraine go away which is amazing but the side effects are so crazy on my body. That's why I was asking what everyone else does. I like idea of accupuncture!! I hate needles but it would be awesome if it helped!!

I get migraines too!  Usually if I take a rx pill for it right at the onset, I can stop it from getting too bad.  But if I miss that window, I'm pretty much useless!

One thing that's helped me is avoiding dietary triggers.  Certain foods can bring on migraines or worsen them once they have occurred.  Here's a list of common triggers:

    http://www.nutrition4health.org/nohanews/NNS02DietMigraineHeadaches.htm

Most likely, not all of these are triggers for you.  Personally, red wine, artificial sweeteners, and MSG are big triggers for me.  I would spend the next few months trying to figure out which of these could be a trigger for you.  Try to stay away from it for a week or so and see how it affects things.  I'll cross my fingers for you!

east cost bride,  I probably should and I might but it is kind of a sad thought.  We're also having a couple pre wedding events.  I think I'll just have to play it by ear and be careful and stocked up on excedrin and imitrex.  Also maybe work out and do back excercises, I think those help and I should definitely do those regularly but... I am lazy.

i forgot all about (in my doctor's words) how topamax dumbs you down. it's not so bad for me anymore since i've been on it for so long, but in the beginning i would forget words like crazy! it was awful, since i was in grad school. i'd be taking an essay test and spend most of the time trying to think of one stupid word, or my teacher would call on me in class and words just wouldn't come. awful.

another thing that might help to those who have anxiety and stress is to get some xanax. stress and anxiety is a big migraine trigger for me, and i knew i'd be freaking out on and a few days before wedding day, so my doctor gave me some meds to help with that. anything to help prevent a migraine!

I had awful, chronic migraines for 7+ years. Basically, from my freshman year of high school until last year. I went to several neurologists, a few specialists and a chiropractor, and nothing worked. Well, sometimes shots of Imitrex worked. But sitting in tears in the emergency room really blew.

I was sitting in a Bio-Psych class, and my professor, who knew about my problem, saw me drinking a Diet Coke. She recommended that I look at that as a possible trigger.

Anyway. So at first I just quit drinking soda and other drinks with aspertame. My migraines went away nearly instantly. I have since radically changed my diet, cut out all artificial sweetners, started drinking at least 64 oz. of water a day, and exercising, I have not had a single migraine since last April. (Except at my cousins baby shower, when I dranka Fresca, not knowing it had Aspertame, and was crying on my bathroom floor that evening..)

So I would suggest looking out for these things, like aspertame and sucralose.

The FDA says these things are safe, but I now know more than a few people who have eliminated these things from their diet and had great relief from migraines and other headaches. Obviously, they don't have an instant effect on most people, but maybe they do for some of us.

I just miss gum.  Cry Hopefully they start making stevia gum soon, because I have no problem with the TruVia or PureVia products at all.

I also take Topamax.  I have been on it for a while now and the side effects so suck but not worse than suffering from the migraines and nausea almost on a daily basis.  I'm finding that the longer I've been on the medication the side effects have gotten better and I've also lost 8lbs.  As for the wedding I know what my triggers are so I'll do my best to avoid those, stress-I hired a wedding planner, lack of sleep-I'll do my best to rest, not eating well-I Will definately eat breakfast the morning of the wedding and have my breakthrough pain reliver medication for migraines on hand if necessary.  I think you try your best not to stress and if you have a neurologist talk to him/her about prevention and identifying your triggers.

You can add me to the list of folks taking Topamax.  I tried lots of other preventatives, but this one actually works for me.  Everyone's different and a good neurologist is key to finding what works for you.  The side effects at first were awful, I didn't notice people talking to me, I wouldn't see things right in front of me, I'd forget words.  They got a million times better over time, and after I switched to the generic, the horrible taste went away with soda too. :-)  I take Maxalt at the very first sign of a migraine, sometimes Advil and some caffeine if I don't want to get sleepy.  I stay away from as many triggers as I can (stress, lack of sleep, wine, aged cheese, preservatives, artificial sweeteners) and try to stay cool.  Having a plan is key.

If any of you take bc and get migraines, go talk to your gyno.  I was on bc for 5 years with no problems and the last year or so I was on them I started getting really bad migraines a few days a week.  I went to the doctor and he told me it was the hormones in my bc so he took me off of them. I had one small one after that and now I haven't been on any bc for over a year and no more migraines.

I know this isn't a local board but one of the most frustrating things for me has been finding a good neurologist.  Does anyone know a good neurologist in the Bay Area?  My mom is still struggling with 5 migraines per week and she's tried a bunch of the preventatives, I feel like if only I can get her to a good neurologist she might keep trying and find something that works but all the ones she's had are very ... "here take this side effecty thing" and get out of my office as soon as possible and never bother me again.

I have a migraine right now. :( My triggers are stress (the most) or long car trips, as well as fluoresecent lights. Also, if I get a caffeine headache from not drinking my coffee early enough, it sometimes morphs into a migraine.

My problem is that I can't afford another medication. I'm on birth control, and I really just can't spring for more. Plus they mess up my body so much! I don't drink any soda or anything with aspertame. That helped, but didn't eliminate the migraines entirely. I also stay away from junk food, because that increases them. I think when I don't get enough exercise I get more migraines, as well, but sometimes I'm honestly just too busy.

I have taken Topamax, Darvoset, Morphine (daily), Xanax, Cymbalta and every preventatitive they have made to date.  None of them work and most of them give me terrible side effects.  I also did the elimination diet and still got migraines.  What I have found that does is work is reducing stress by staying out of debt, eliminating all scented beauty products, avoiding sugars and artificial sweeteners, (as much as possible) drinking at least 100 oz of water daily and eating as close to the "original" as possible.  I don't eat out much or eat much junk food.  When I start getting a headache I take two excedrine migraine with a glass of Mt Dew and lay down.  They tell me I should try "alternate" therapy, but every time a got to a chrio or get a massage I get a violent headache.
