I was thinking about doing mini cupcakes, rather than a large cake for our wedding. We would have a smaller cutting cake for us, then guests could choose the flavor they would like. Here’s my dilemma:
Our recpetion venue is very rectangular and long. The dance floor is on one end, the tables are all in the middle, and the cake and present table will be at the other end. I am afraid that if we do mini cupcakes on a cute display, everyone will go right to the dance floor after dinner and not even see/care for the cupcakes. Does anyone have any experience with dessert tables that weren’t in the center of all the wedding action? Is it worth it to do or should we just do a regular cake so we know everyone gets a piece? I do not want to pay for them and then half still there at the end of the night…

I know that people are more likely to eat cupcakes than a slice of cake, just because they’re more convenient. Also, if you’re cutting the cake that would draw everyone’s attention to that area, and then I assume that you would just announce that the mini cupcakes are there for everyone to enjoy.

And if they ignore the cupcakes, more for you!

My sister had a dessert table that was actually outside of the main dining room. Everyone managed to find it, it’s sweets. I think people will find your cupcakes.

We’re getting mini cupcakes for our engagement party and have discussed a similar problem.
My parents organized a very large party over the summer with cupcakes, and ordered 2.5x number of cupcakes per guest, but many still didn’t get a cupcake! They all disappeared, and after talking up the cupcakes to several guests, I felt awful that they didn’t get any! If the cupcakes look appetizing, you shouldn’t have any problems with left overs, but unlike cake, people will have multiple cupcakes. They’re easy to pick up and walk around with, while you can moderate cake and make sure each guest gets a slice.
With our engagement party, I really want beautifully decorated mini cupcakes since I know the guests will want to try a few different types, but I want to be able to order enough to accomodate everyone. People go crazy for cupcakes – very odd! It’s just portable cake!

@anneh1990: I think the cupcakes would be great! Some people are not dessert people and they will blow off the dessert table regardless of where it’s situated. For those of us who appreciate sweets (I LOVE dessert!), we will find that table no matter where it is located!! You run the risk of having a ton of leftover dessert no matter which dessert you go with. I would leave to-go boxes close to the cupcakes or cake with a “feel free to take a piece home” sign.

We have the same situation. We have a cupcake stand with a small cake to cut on top and we are planning on cutting the cake as soon as we make our entrance so people can watch.

Mini cupcakes are awesome. I went to a wedding with them in a variety of flavors and then bite sized cheezecake. It was so cool. The only reason I am doing a regular cake is because my venue includes the catering and they only do full cakes. Everyone loved the variety at the wedding I went to, I say go for it!
