I swear, I will never understand why people like tervis tumblers. People in the south seem to think that's the only thing they can drink from. They look kinda crappy for the money you pay for them, they get cracks around the top edge reallllyyyy quickly, and they start to look bad after about six months! (FI's old roommate had some, I would not pay for those things... haha)

No offense to those of you that like them but seriously I'm just not sure why. I have seen them on every registry, I swear! Buy some nice glassware, people!

Man, I'd sure like to visit the south.  This makes me think of sweet tea.  I don't know what sweet tea is exactly (Canadian, what are you gonna do?), but I'd always wanted to visit the south and drink sweet tea from something like that.

What's a good place to go in the south?  North Carolina?  Is north Carolina the real south, or is that too far north?

You really made me laugh out loud!

You want to go to the real south? Go to Birmingham, Alabama. That's about the most southern place I can think of that's going to have everything you're looking for :)

You read my mind.. I had never heard of them! They're kind of funny looking to me... but I'm just used to plain glasses, you know like this:

Well, that or ugly plastic glasses that everyone seems to have a million of!

Oh, by the way, the recipe for sweet tea (damn I don't know metrics so maybe wing it a little?)

2 family size teabags (Lipton or similar brand)

    5 cups of water

1 to 1 1/4 cups of sugar (depending on how sweet y'all like it ;)

You just put the water and tea in a saucepan and bring it to a boil. Let it boil for about 1 minute, then pull it off and dump in the sugar and pull out the teabags. Stir and stir and then put it in a 1 gallon pitcher, and add water until it's full.

I guess then you put it in your tervis tumbler... hahahaha

hmmm i've never heard of those.  I personally can't stand drinking out of plastic drinkware, (tumblers).  I hate the feeling in my mouth.  I prefer to drink only from glasses.

Honestly, they are made out of the same crappy plastic that nalgene bottles or what have you are made out of. They don't withstand repeated use very well...

you know, these people who sell it are genius... i mean, they make an inferior product, sell millions to people who keep buying it because it's some sort of status item, and then the product breaks and they up the price and sell more! What a racket.

We have those!  With a fleur-de-lis on them.  I can't wait for us to have a whole set of matching glasses...made of glass.

LOL- I didn't realize this was a wedding registry item so much as a movin to the old folks home item... The reason why people like them is because they don't sweat! so your glass isnt all wet in the heat of the south!! Personally not a fan, they're too big for me to hold comfortably in my hand and I am fairly certain that plastic will kill me.

    That's so funny.

@cbqq - it's funny that you say you don't know what sweet tea is because you're Canadian.  I went to Los Angeles and ordered an iced tea, and just about choked because it was just tea.  Apparently we always drink sweet tea here, although I think it's less authentic up here.

I've never seen these before!! I think the bee one is cute... even if the product sucks! hehe

So this is not really related to the tumblers, but maybe the Labor you can enlighten me on "all things southern"!? I'm moving to Kentucky (eventually), but I'm still unsure if thats considered the south or not haha. I'm Canadian so I just always assumed if you had a southern accent you lived in the south :)

They had those at homegoods the other day for only $10.  The ones that I bought have never cracked... but I agree... they are expensive if you don't get them from a discount store.

Ugh, I hate those things. They are just a big fat waste of money and space.

P.S. I also hate sweet tea. I'm a bad Southerner. I do like unsweetened tea. And collard greens.

Canadian Ice Tea is the same as Sweet Teah, eh?  Well there you go!

Except let's be honest, in Canada we don't actually make our iced tea from real tea bags.  Am I right Canadians?  You know I'm right.  We get that stuff from a can or at best from Nestea crystals.  So it's got to be a little different, right?

I'm going to try to make some of the home made type soon.  Things that are home made make me feel much more accomplished and this seems quite easy!

okay ladies~ why we use them

In the south, ice melts way too fast on hot days... this baby keeps your drink cold

secondly if you would read the paperwork in the box~ they have lifetime gurantees and IF anything happens to one send to the factory and within days you have a new one

In the south, lots of us have swimming pools and those babies wont' break if you drop on the bricks surrounding the pool~ dropping glass outside is just a NO NO

Come live in the south and you too will become a fan!

    Love mine

Love the top that fits over it and makes it like an adult sippy cup, so you can carry hot or cold drinks and not spill. It nicely is designed to fit in cup holders.

@daydreamwanderer I don't know, but I know for awhile my parents had some serious plastic cups/dishes/etc and it was horrible. I hate the taste of plastic when I'm drinking, especially if it's water.

Tampamom I agree that there are benefits to it, but the guarantee doesn't cover cosmetic defects. Sorry, but there's no way I'd serve my guests in these! I don't have a problem persay with someone drinking out of them, but when these expensive glasses are the only "glassware" for which you register... well, NO, don't do it!!

I've never heard of these, but in the interest of a very very small hijack:

We have two different types of glasses in our house...not because we came with two, but because FI refuses to drink out of glass ones.

He says "I always had plastic, and I will always HAVE plastic."

whatever, dude.  whatever rocks your socks.

We do have some large acrylic tumblers from the Martha Stewart collection -- they're supposed to be for outdoor dining, but I prefer drinking my water out of them because they're so huge. We only have small glasses at the moment!

Yea!  I love my FSU Tumbler! I second everything that Tampa Mom has said.

    1)  The ice doesn't melt as quick in them and they don't sweat

    2)  They also can be used for hot drinks

    3)  They don't shatter if you drop them on the pool deck

    4)  So many fun designs!

Sweat tea is a southern thing and just to clarify, south florida is not considered in the south.  North Florida is more "southern" then South Florida!

Scissors - I was upset to read you don't like sweet tea, but at least you eat your collards!

There are also a lot of knock offs that are sold down here which may be the ones that you guys all see cracking and breaking.

EDIT: Also, here is the recipe that my FI swears by for sweet tea:

4 family size Louizinne Tea Bags (we don't care for lipton at all) in a 2 qt saucepan.  Bring to a good boil and then let sit for about 10-20 minutes (depending on how strong you want the tea).  We put 1.5 cups of sugar in a 2 gallon container and fill the container with water about 3/4 of the way (1.5 gallons)

I've never seen those (Ohio girl here) but I hate plastic glasses in general. I always thought it was really weird when I went to friends' houses growing up and they had plastic glasses! My mom always always kept real glass glasses. Sure, when we were little we had our own sippy cups and then we had a few plastic glasses she would give us kids until we were old enough to handle the glass. But come on--- no adult should be consistently drinking out of a plastic glass in their own home haha.

Re: sweet tea- blech. So glad I live in Ohio :) (although i'm totally on board with the frying of pickles that happens down south...)

Caszos... you are so right.  The knockoffs do get scratched and ugly.

My tumblers which are for by the pool, in the car, and on my desk ~ all look brand new and they are 8 years old.   My daughter has some that she has used ALL through college and they look awesome too, so I don't know why some are saying they get old and scratchy.

I love the no "sweat" feature too!  And having a drink stay cold in this climate is A - okay in my book.

I WOULD never only register for these, can't imagine a true southerner doing just that.  You need your everyday glass, your crystal and this for pool times.

wait, those are a status thing? like people aim to have them? i always assumed that they were college leftovers.  I'm so not a southerner down in the south, and this isn't necessarily the "real" south. I would just flounder in a real southern state. Probably run my yankee booty right back to pennsylvania!

PS: sweet tea! i can't BELIEVE how much sugar! I drink my tea with nothing in it, maybe lemon. Yikes

When FI and I registered at BB&B the registry lady nearly freaked when she saw we hadn't registered for any of these.  She specifically took us back over to the display to show us how great they were.... our response "ummmm, looks like a plastic cup." We registered for big people glasses, made of glass.

@Caszos You didnt say how much water to start with in the saucepan! Does it matter?

I wanted to chime in on this because I just moved to Denver, from Georgia. I dated a guy from B-ham for a while (too long! ha) and so to say these puppies remind me of the south is an understatement! ha

I actually bought these, with the Alabama A on them (roll tide! bahahaha) for my closest friend down there. I am not from the south at all, and have never felt more like a hillbilly than when I purchased these! Southern frat boys everywhere were cheering :)

I WILL say, in their defense, I lived through 2 Georgia summers...and they are unbearable at times! I wore sundresses all summer simply because you sweat so bad any pants tuck to you like glue! So with good reason, they go for this!

I agree also with the Floridian who mentioned them being good for pool situations, and for boating, and also to be the coolest guy in your frat... :) Sorry, i had to.

Oh, THEY'RE A SOUTHERN THING! I'm the North half of a North-South marriage, and my husband's family has gajillions of those! And they gave us four of them with the SOUTH CAROLINA FLAG in them (because South Carolinians apparently aren't happy unless they've put a palmetto on something recently), and they take up WAY too much room. I mean, we live in NYC. My kitchen cupboards are about the size of this text box.
