Go to Jared...that is where I got mine and I get compliments on it all the time! I cant post a picture right now but will try to do it later. But they do free cleaning, free sizing, they even said that they would sodder my ring together with my wedding bands for free (this wont be any easy process they basically have to re-structure the ring). Also of course I can have any diamonds replaced that fall out of the setting even the center stone and they do free rhodium plating I believe, which is important if you have a white gold ring. I just have to go in every six months, which I like to do anyways to get it cleaned. All of this is if you buy the warrenty which I think was only $100 or something close to that. We actually went to the one in Maple Grove, they have a ton of rings and are really very helpful. The thing I think is important to remember is that Jared is a big store chain, they have stores all throughout MN and arent likely to go out of business any time soon so your warranty will always be good. I went to a LOT of jewelry stores, Knox, Wedding Day, Shane Company, All of the typical mall ones, and some in Edina that I honestly dont even remember the names of...out of all of them Jared had the best selections for me! Hope that helps.
Thanks for the advice. Where else is there to look in Maple Grove? Did you feel like you got a lot of bang for your buck with Jareds or were they more expensive then you anticipated? What kinds of questions would you recommend asking? I know quite a bit but I want to be as knowledgable as possible.
Wedding Day Diamonds is in Maple Grove practically right across the street from Jared. They had some nice things but what I didnt like about them is that none of the stuff they have in the store is real. They use fake diamonds to showcase the settings. I thought I got a lot of bang for my buck at Jared...people think that my ring was much more expensive than it actually was. I thought they were very reasonably priced and have a great selection of diamonds. For me the hardest part was picking out the center stone...but my fiance did that so it wasnt a problem. I would just make sure that they tell you all about the financing that they have along with everything that is included in the warranty. If you go in there with a budget they are very good at showing you what you can afford, I didnt think they were too pushy at all. If you are looking at the center stone I would just make sure you know what is most important for you, size, color, clarity...and they will answer all of your questions about that too.
I went to every ring store I can imagine. Knox impressed me the most, by far. Its family owned and the sons helped us out both times we went in looking for ideas. All of their rings were really unique. They are a bit more spendy but htey are rings you wont find anywhere else. We got such great service that we will definitely be buying both our wedding bands from there.
My friend got her ring at Shane Co, which was great to her but I had a really horrible experience there. Another friend got hers at Wedding Day. They were nice to us, but I didnt like their selecion.
Mine is from Jared and I couldn't be happier with their service! My ring is white gold and I have had it replated twice now (first time to match my engagement ring to my wedding ring) and second because I'm a bit too hard on my ring... Anyway, My husband got pretty much most of the coverage that was offered and we get it cleaned and checked anytime we got up to the cities. (We live in Rochester and usually go to the Jared in Burnsville)
We got my ring at Kay jewelers. They have really good prices for non-custom. The warranty was a little bit extra but pretty cheap.
My FH went to Jared in Maple Grove, and he said it was the best experience he's ever had. We are relitively young(21). He said that when he went to Jared's they treated him like an adult, while at Wedding Day they treated him like he had no clue what he was doing. Kind of a hard thing for my FH to take since he had put a lot of research into buying my ring. My setting is adorable and makes my diamond look a lot bigger than it is.
Like the other women said go to Jared!
I do not like Jared's. We bought my wedding band there and the diamonds are falling out all the time. We bought it and kept it in the box until the wedding day. The night before the wedding I went to check on it and it was missing a diamond! They couldn't fix it that night. So for the wedding day and in the photos I had to wear a ring with a missing diamond!
We also bought their warranty and it does cover replacement of the missing diamonds and soldering as long as you bring it in every 6 months. This is a huge annoyance to me because there is no Jared's in my area - I have to drive 2 hours to get to it. When we bought the warranty they said repairs could be done in 30 minutes. That never ever happens. I have to drive all the way up there and then wait around for 5 hours for them to fix my ring. I try to tell them I don't live there and have nothing to do around there but they don't care! They will never get things done in 30 minutes like they promised when they sold us the ring.
They also soldered my rings together crooked, so now they are too tight and my ring really cuts off my circulation in the summer.
I DO NOT recommend Jareds. I've had nothing but bad experiences with them.
I do recommend BlueNile.com. They have very nice diamonds and everything is certified.
We went to RF Moeller in Edina. They are family owned & have had the BEST experience their! Every time we come back they remember us and we have built a wonderful relationship with them. We will be customers for life!
@amariem25: Did he get yours from the one in Maple Grove? We went there and were not really pleased with the initial meeting so we have crossed them off our list of places were looking. Did you buy your diamond from blue nile and then have your ring from Jared's set with that diamond? If you did, did they still cover the diamond with their warranty? I'm having a really difficult time figuring out the best way to get the most diamond for the least amount of money with the whole ring covered by a good warranty.
@hsearle: I will have to check them out. I think the family owned stores do seem to really care about you and want to get you the best ring they can.
@MsBrooklynA - no we went to the Jareds in Burnsville for my wedding band. My engagement ring was from Laskers in Rochester (who I also wouldn't recommend). We bought a diamond from Blue Nile and put that in the engagement ring from Laskers. The wedding band from Jareds was completely from Jareds - nothing from Blue Nile was inserted in that.
Anyways, we didn't have good experiences with either Laskers or Jareds Burnsville. Jareds because the quality was bad and the service is terrible still. Laskers Jewelers was bad because they were very overpriced, snotty, and because they didn't have the ring in on time for my husband even though they promised it would be ready a month before the vacation that he had planned for the proposal. They did absolutely nothing to remedy the situation for him and he had to go out and buy a different ring to propose with on the vacation.
Did Laskers warranty the diamond you bought from blue nile? I'm sorry you had such a terrible experiance with both places. That would make getting things cleaned and fixed really difficult!
no they didn't. Laskers wouldn't warranty anything unless you bought the diamond from them. So I don't even think the rest of my ring (which included other diamonds on the side of the e-ring from Laskers) is even covered by Laskers.
one of my bridesmaids got her ring from arthur's and has had great service there; the ring i originally wanted was actually there, too, but we ended up doing the custom thing. my co-worker gave met he name of his diamond guy, which i passed on to my now-fiance, and he picked out the diamond and gave it to me in a classic solitare setting which we then got to go design the setting for. PM me if you want names! i'm happy to share - and show pictures!
I highly, highly recommend Arthurs.
My hubby went to every shop and he found Arthurs to be the most knowledgeable and to provide the best service. We went with a Tacori ring and found that you can only order them at Jared's or Arthur's. Jared's was super pushy and woudln't even give my husband stats on the diamonds. They just asked, "well, do you like it" "Is it sparkly" - duh, all diamonds are sparkly...
Arthur's was by far the best.
@MsBrooklynA, my FI had originally planned on purchasing a diamond from Blue Nile and then getting the setting at Wedding Day (apparently he even had the diamond in hand). Wedding Day would not warranty the ring with a diamond purchased elsewhere. I think that is pretty standard practice.
I've been trying to hunt this thread down all day (saw it yesterday just as I was trying to catch my bus)!
We went to Goodman, right here in Rochester. They have great service, and the ladies have bent over backwords for me. The warrenty package covers absolutely everything you can think of. I have 59 diamonds on my ring..every last one is covered.
My cousin who's getting married next month lives in St Paul and went someplace up there that actually does the service IN SHOP. I can ask her where that was for you if you like?
Here are our rings...
My FI got my ring at Shane Co. I was a little ticked that they wanted to charge $150 bucks to set an outside diamond in the setting but otherwise they have been great. I have always had nice people when I have been there, they take great care with cleaning and examining the ring every time I have brought it in and have free rhodium plating and sizing if you ever need it (both I have had done) They also take such nice care to examine the ring and map its unique qualities everytime I bring it in so I always know I am getting MY diamond back. I really appreciate this since my diamond is a family heirloom. I also bought my FI ring there and he loves it!
SHANE! Loved them, they were helpful but not pushy, really well priced, and everything you buy from there is covered FOR LIFE, FOR FREE. plus the whole rodium plating, sizing etc thing.
FYI - Shane Co is in bankruptcy. They have been for 2 years. I wouldn't buy my ring from them. Also, I just went to Arthur's again to help a friend look for his girlfriend. I'm blown away by their service. And, they don't work on commission - so they aren't pushy.
I got my e-ring (the band) at Osterman Jewelers in the Mall of America at their Michael Werdiger event. I'd HIGHLY recommend those events because you can choose a stone and choose the band and they will make your ring right there on the spot. It turned out great. However, we had some bad experiences with Ostermans and Kay (which are owned by the same people, including Jared) when it came to getting my wedding band... check out my post titled "Kay Jewelers DISASTER! I'm not sure what switched, but I'd still go back to Osterman's for future purchases.
The first time I went to Wedding Day I had a great experience (I agree with the person above, though, that it sucks they use fake stones in the store, so you can't actually see what it's going to look like with a real diamond). However, when I went back, the customer service was SO bad. I walked in and didn't get greeted for a HALF hour. Then, I asked to see a ring and they handed it to me then the girl disappeared for another HALF hour. I set the ring back down on the glass and told the cashier that it was there then stormed out. If you're looking to spend hundreds to thousands of dollars, you'd think you'd get some great customer service.
Stroll out to the Albertville Outlet Mall. We got our rights at Ultra Diamonds there. No joke we got both our rings for $500 total, get compliments all the time on them. Great service and warranty.

way too cute!!
Anyways... Where did you ladies buy your ring from? BF and I are going to go look this weekend and I have heard some great things about Arthurs jewlers but I would love to here where yours came from and see it. I'm open to any recommendations. I think we might head to Maple Grove first. What about Jared's? Are the commercials just all talk? What about your warranties, what is included? Or if you had yours custom made what are the details? How did you insure it?
I'm so curious!
