1112bride:  I would pay by check and also ask for a copy of the estimate from the body shop. That way you’ve got some documentation to show that she got an estimate to repair the damage for XX dollars and you wrote a check to her for the exact same amount.

I will say that there’s a chance she’s might just file with your insurance since she’s got the information. But hopefully, she’ll be reasonable and at the very least give you a chance to settle it outside of the insurance company.

Good luck!

1112bride:  pay the body shop directly and get a copy of the receipt.

That’s what happened when someone reare ended FI, they just paid the bill at the shop and we got a copy for our records.

tigergrrl2008:  The safest way is to have it go through your insurance, then you reimburse the insurance company. That way they get the other person to sign off. They also make sure that she doesn’t include any other pre-existing damage with your scratch repair.

1112bride:  Phone your insurance vendor and ask their advice. I don’t know where you live but I have done this in the past.

Your insurance doesn’t go up because you have an accident, it goes up when you have a claim. If you reimburse the insurance company for whatever amount they pay out to her insurance company, there  is no claim on your record.

We had this happen and the lady that hit my husband had him sign a letter stating that she had paid him and that he would not file a claim the insurance company. I thought it was incredibly smart on her part and it worked out well for everyone involved seeing as she only broke the tag light housing on his car which was a grand total of $60.
