Have you ever waved and smiled at someone and then realized they weren’t who you thought they were?
This happened to me today at the mall. My boyfriend and I were walking by a couple of guys sitting at a bench with a stroller and a few kids with them. I looked over and it was one of my old college classmates, Paul. I run into Paul every so often and last saw him about a month ago. Now, Paul is very affectionate. When we see each other he’ll usually run over and give me a huge hug. So as we approached them, I smiled, said hi, and waved. He had this really confused look on his face…that look when someone doesn’t know who you are, but he smiled.
It was in that moment I realized that, even though he looked exactly like Paul, he wasn’t Paul! I was SO embarrassed, but just kept walking. BACKSTORY: My classmate Paul is gay. Paul once told me that he had a straight, identical twin brother who had a girlfriend and a few children, but I had never met or seen pictures of him. Well…now I’ve seen him! And they look exactly alike!
I can’t wait to tell Paul the next time I see him. I’m sure they get confused for each other all the time.
Just over Christmas I was mistaken for someone I’m not. Granted, they thought I was my sister, so I understand! And the person who mistook me for her hasn’t seen my sister in-person for YEARS, they went to high school together.
@MrsWishyWashy: That’s what I figured! Identical twins probably have that happen often!
@abbyful: I can see it! Especially if it’s been years!
@julies1949: Once when we were at a party and my boyfriend had too much to drink, I was walking back to the group after using the bathroom and I saw him walk over to our friend’s girlfriend who was standing with the other girls, back towards him (I had been standing over there too before I went to the bathroom) and he put his hand on her back by her hip and when she turned around he jumped back and was like “oops, thought you were latte” and behind him I piped up “nope, over here” and we all laughed. The other girl and I both had white shirts, denim jeans, and similar hair styles and bodies similar enough to mistake each other for.
Oh my gosh !!! I did something very similar at my new job, bumped into someone that i beleived was my sisters friend and started chatting with her. Oh you changed your hair and says yes and turns away from me. I try again and say something like I’m “Janes” sister wishing for recognition, nothing. Now this is a girl that I shared a hotel room with at my sisters Vegas wedding. So I assume she’s being snobby and I carry on with my day. Call my sister at the end of the day asking what her friend “j” does for work now as I am in a totally different field than my sisters and “J’s” and she says she is not sure as “j” is pregnant now. I am totally confused by this ???? then she tells me you know she has has a twin sister !!!!! omg !!!!! I never knew that !!!! most embarrassing first impression at a new job ever !!!!!
Well, if that was his twin, I am sure that happens all the time. He probably thinks its funny when it does. It could also be he that is embarassed because he thinks he should recognize you but doesn’t! You know when someone comes up to you from your past and you kinda think you remember them but they remember you? Awkward but ultimately funny!
