My mum was really picky about her dress for the same reasons -- a lot of the MoB dresses out there are very "old" looking. We went to a bridal shop in Toronto and found a beautiful Pronovias gown for her. It's a deep red (kind of like a red wine colour), strapless, very fitted at the top with a slight mermaid flare at the bottom with a very short train. Try their website, they have beautiful dresses!
Dress Barn has some great ones. I don't have a picture of it, but my aunt-mom wore this gorgeous red dress we found for $30. She got self-concious and put a cardigan over it, but I thought she looked awesome. She's 52, 5'7" and a size six.
Dillards has some awesome, non jacketed items! I would highly recommend them!
I'm 44. Here are a few dresses I'd like to wear. I don't know if you want floor length or knee length. If you want knee length I suggest you look at cocktail dresses and if you want floor length look at BM dresses, that is in addition to looking in the MOB section. I agree that most often the MOB dresses look matronly but I found these in Nordstrom's MOB section so it's not impossible.
I was a bit worried about my Mum as well. She's 42, 5'3 and a small size (4 or 6). Fortunately, she already had a dress bought that she had only worn once.
It's very similar to this one, only a deep plum/purple color.
I'd definitely suggest finding a some-what conservative cocktail dress. Looks MOB, but not like an "old" MOB lol.
My mom and I have been looking for a while! =) She's 47, barely 5 foot and just lost 80lbs, she's not very curvy or anything! YAY, so happy for her! Mom would probably kill me if she knew Im posting these pics of her lol LOVE HER! xo oh and of course these are sample sizes, so they didnt fit her TRUE.
Not sure why the pictures are so funky sized, but these were moms TOP 2! Both by Beloise? We came back in to (Jinny's Bridal) to order the one in RED above, but Mom decided to look through the dresses once again and found the BLACK one with a more modest bustline/front. Mom is super conservative/modest. She decided to get the black dress style but in the RED color. She looked LOVELY in the RED! The camera does no justice for the coloring or the style of the dresses! But I cant wait! She only paid $165, which is pretty good in my opinion! Best of Luck!
My mom is going to try David's Bridal, Dessy or Bari Jay. They have some dresses that dont look too bad at all and not paper bag like
I would definitely recommend checking out department stores instead of bridal salons! My mom found a few dresses at Nordstroms, shopping in the cocktail dress section.
I fell in LOVE with this dress from David's Bridal and ordered it in Marine:
It fits true to my typical size, hits me right in the middle of my knees, and floats away from my stomach (my "problem" area). I am 50 y.o., a size 10/12, 5'4" and self-concious. This dress provides coverage and comfort!
I don't wear dresses often and I tried this one on as a whim when my youngest daughter was shopping at David's for her homecoming dress. It was the first MOB dress I tried on and I went back with my mom (grandmother of the bride) and she helped me decide on color, etc. We felt the lighter shades were too brides-maidy looking, but the darker shades make this dress very appropriate for a MOB dress. AND I know I can wear it again somewhere. I am getting a chiffon bolero to match and I think it will be perfect for my daughter's April, 2012 wedding. She has a rustic-themed reception, with turquoise, green, yellow colors. The color I chose will not clash, will not stand out, but will blend in and look nice at the same time. I am blessed with a daughter who didn't care a bit what color or style dress I chose. :)
So, just my two cents, I think you can get a nice dress from David's, but I think you have to look beyond the MOB section. I found this one with the clearance dresses, but had to order it in my size and color.

She is only 46 and looks even younger so I don't want her in the typical paper bag shaped taffeta dress with a jacket. I told her no jackets allowed! She is also very petite, 5 feet tall and a size 4 with not too much curviness. Send me your suggestions!
