look online at nordstroms. they have formal dresses that aren’t quite so “prom” looking if that’s your mom’s concern, and they go on sale frequently.

I know you may not want to hear this but have you thought about thrift stores? I LOVE them! I got a dress to wear to a wedding for 15 bucks and all it needed was to be hemmed. It was satin! I really think it might be a good place to at least take a look because they do have some great stuff sometimes!

Have you/has she looked at Rent the Runway?  A lot of the dresses are targeted to younger people–like more my age than my mom’s age–but there are some that would look fab on an older woman.

Renting means more dress for less money, so we’re looking into it. The downside is no alterations.

@tranquility: I was going to say this. Around my mom they have really nice used bridal and gown stores. She bought her dress at an “attic” of a bridal store (think Filenes basement type thing)

I found this by googling I think may be in your area
