I think you should let you mom choose something she likes and is comfortable in. She needs to be able to relax and enjoy the day.
I would show her some dresses first, and if she agrees, have her try on a few. If she's still not comfortable, I don't think it would be a big deal if she wore a pant suit.
i dont see an issue if she's in a pantsuit. perhaps pick one that's a pretty color and not just black.

Hey bees! Ok, so soon I will be shopping with my mom and FMIL to pik out their wedding attire. I know FMIL will choose a nice dress, but I can't even remember the last time my mom wore a dress. Even when she got married to my step- dad (after 18 years together at the JOP) she wore a pant suit. She just isn't the dress type. Do I "make" her wear a dress that I know she will be uncomfortable in or let her wear a nice pant suit? Oh yeah, both my Mom and step-dad (bio dad died about 8 years ago) will be walking me down the aisle. Do you think it will look weird that 1 mom is in a dress and the other in pants. My mom will still wear heels, make-up, and have her hair done (all of which she usually does NOT do ever).
