I was raised in a Christian household that believes strongly in modesty. My mom was always nagging me to "pull my shirt up" and when I met the man of my dreams and moved out I found out he felt the same way. I truly respect the opinion of being modest. I will wear halters but I won't allow any cleavage and I will wear shorts but they must be mid thigh.
But I'm having such a hard time looking for the perfect dress for my wedding. I've found some dresses online that I like but they are either too expensive or they are strapless. My grandma is a seamstress and said she would not mind installing a modesty panel on my dress. But how high can she possibly go without looking stupid? And I like the idea of a strapless dress because at least, unless it's a strapless dress, it seems to come across the entire chest area. I've thought about adding some straps to it so I don't look so naked. But my FI really doesn't like the idea of me wearing a strapless dress so I've been looking looking looking. I've been able to find a couple strapless dresses that have attatchable straps to them so it doesn't give me such an illusion that I'm so bare. I just don't know how dorky it will look if I add a modesty panel so it goes higher up, or a jacket since I get really hot when excited.
So any suggestions? I've seen some LSD dresses but they seem so covered up they are completely lacking in any style whatsoever.
Try Jasmine. They will alter any design and offer a "temple-ready" collection.
Would you consider a strapless dress with a bolero over it? That would look so cute!
there are dresses out there. you could modify a strapless dress to have cap sleeves. just start going to some boutiques and tell them what you want.
Hi! I found some websites I think you might like:
http://www.latterdaybride.com/modest-wedding-dresses.php
http://www.beautifullymodest.com/store/wedding-dresses/
http://www.thesilverhanger.com/
I have never bought from any of those websites, but I do think that they will give you an idea of what options you do have. And if you do find a dress that you love at a bridal store but doesn't quite fit your needs one of these websites could give you an idea of alterations that you could do to them. Good luck!!!
David's Bridal has a couple of dresses right now that I'd consider quite modest. I posted about them on another post here on the hive recently (although that bride was trying to cover tattoos). Some of the dresses other bees posted there might be helpful for you too! They were beautiful!

What about these?
http://www.latterdaybride.com/bridgeport-details.php
http://www.latterdaybride.com/riverside-details.php (maybe remove the cap sleeve?)
http://www.latterdaybride.com/angiola-details.php
http://www.latterdaybride.com/bellissimo-details.php
http://www.latterdaybride.com/steinbruck-details.php
I think you have the most options if you look and find a dress you like, so you can see them on in person, and then figure out how to alter them. Like adding a little panel or wearing a wrap or bolero.
I think adding a bolero to a strapless dress is probably your best option :)
What about something like what Ivanka Trump did? If you're worried about being hot with a bolero, then a lace top like this should be cooler and still give you coverage. I'm no seamstress, but it seems like it shouldn't be impossible to add something like this to most strapless dresses?

Milana: Maggie Sottero cap sleeves
Janet: Maggie Sottero strapless with bolero
Cambria: Maggie Sottero has matching lace bolero
Jennifer: Maggie Sottero cool neckline
I found this thread from Google; it has 15 or so links to modest bridal gowns. Good luck!
What do you guys think about these?
I really liked this, and even though it is lace it seems as though it would cover me up decently. I could just put a modesty panel on so you can't seen any hint of cleavage : http://www.justinalexanderbridal.com/en_us/9552.html
Same thing with this one too: http://mcbridals.com/item/?i=210254
Not sure if any of these will work-everyone's defintion of modest is different.
I love this-no cleavage
Barbara: Maggie Sottero
I LOVE lace sleeves and coverage, looks so romantic. It's one thing I kinda wish I had done with my dress.
Search for Mormon bridal shops, they have dresses with sleeves and without those plunging necklines.
You could also consider your strapless dress idea and put a lace bolero over it. You could even attach the bolero if you're worried you'll be tempted to take it off.
Pronovias has several classy gowns with sleeves!!!
ChiChat I really like that picture, it seems as though lace will be the best option. And this one is so beautiful http://www.maggiesottero.com/dress.aspx?attrib31=279&keywordType=any&pageSize=15&page=1&style=A3276B&moreOptions=1
Oh i LOOOVE Ivanka Trumps dress. So gorgeous.
But i do think a strapless dress with a bolero is probably your best option since you find LDS dresses to be "too modest".
@Sweetbride....what sites were you looking at the LDS wedding dresses? I got mine from a LDS store and hate to think mine lacked any style. lol I saw someone included some links to latterdaybride.com. I would check them out. There were some gorgeous dresses and varied alot in style as well.
@ SweetRose: Glad you liked Cambria! See girlfriend, you do have options!
Thank you so so so much everyone! I appreciate the styles you showed me and the help you provided!
And I'm sorry if I was being rude with my comment about the LDS dresses. I didn't think they were "too" modest I guess, I just felt that from far away (i.e. on the website) they looked very similar. So I'm sorry if I offended anyone. :(
@ JsDragonfly: I don't quite remember what websites I was looking at for LDS dresses, there were some pretty ones, just not anything that seemed to match my personality.
@ SweetRose, I love the mcbrides dress and the maggie dress. Either of those would look great, but my favorite is the mcbrides dress. Good luck both of those are beautiful!!!!!!!
What do you think of Mrs. Glitter's dress. I think it looks modest and she's one of the most gorgeous brides I have seen.
My wedding gown is an Eternity Gown. They sell them at bridal shoppes, so you won't have to order them online. I drove two hours away to a shop that sold the brand and in the end they had some modest gowns to try on, but not the one I wanted. What I ended up doing was researching different cuts of wedding gowns and trying dresses of that cut to see what cut look best on me. When I was confident that the cut would look wonderful, I ordered the gown I wanted from the bridal shop. Nice thing was that they added length to my exact specifications so I didn't need to get a hem. I also read that you can special order the dress to have different sleeve options.
Bonny also has a modest collection called "Bliss." I only found one store that sold them and the only dresses they had to try on from that collection were plus sized.
Mrs. Avocado had a watters dress altered to add more sleeve onto it, and I second Mrs. Glitter's amazing dress as well. Also, Avo's sister Shay had a pretty cool dress too. Good luck in your search!
I think if you search Pronovias (2010 collection and Manuel Mota), you'll see some really beautiful gowns that are modest but very classic and stylish. I've drooled over Pronovias gowns for years now. :) They also, being a Spanish company (and therefore, catering to some Catholic brides) have plenty of pretty lace overlays and boleros to keep things modest. Seriously, check it out.
I didn't think you were being offensive when you said that about LDS dresses. They are, in my opinion, on the extreme end of 'modest' and i just got the impression you wanted something in between.
I'm not LDs but since you put my response in quotes, just letting you know how i interpretted that! There is a very wide range of modest gowns available. =]
The Justin Alexander 9552 was my second choice. I would have reccomended that one, but I also know it's in the $2500-2800 range :-/ It is completely gorgeous however! It would have been worth the splurge. You can see all the images of me in it IRL on this thread

Stephanie Allen has some as well...
Kelly was my fave....

Glenda from sottero and midgley

Or, maybe this Jasmine one? There's a lot of modest one shoulder dresses... would that work?

I second those who have said Pronovias. My dress is Pronovias and has beautiful lace cap sleeves that don't look overly covered up.
what about something like this: http://www.casablancabridal.com/collections/view/28/376 from cassablanca?
I ordered a strapless dress (after kicking and screaming about NOT wanting one) and had the store owner order extra fabric. Her seamstress is going to make cap sleeves for my dress out of the fabric. Woohoo!
