Hi Bees!
Long time lurker, first time poster :). My BF and I have been "browsing" rings lately and I have decided on a moissante. So my question is, have any of you purchased a moissante? What is your verdict? Can you suggest a good place to shop (online, instores)? Thanks for your help! Oh, and I'd love to see some of your beautiful rings!
Hello LuckyDucky! Welcome.
There have been many posts about the moissante rings. From what I've gathered so far they are a great alternative to diamonds and def have some great sparkle to them! I believe, however, that there have been some negative reviews on them as well with the fact that the stone tends to turn a yellowish tint over time.
As far as what websites to go? I couldn't help you there. Sorry.
Welcome!! I was totally in your boat, and was 95% sure we were going moissanite but I JUST went ring shopping this weekend with the FI (we're doing things kinda back words and wacky). Anyway years ago we went to the Pasadena Jewelry mart and the ladies at Prestige Jewelry were unbelievable. We went back this weekend and it was the same, it's by far the best customer service I've ever received in my life. They are absolutely no pressure and the service is great and they are SO informative. My point being we were asking her all sorts of questions about diamond alternatives and she showed us some amazing things. We saw white sapphires which are really pretty and they're still on my list but what she showed me that was down right shocking were the new CZ's from Japan. Now don't get me wrong my FI and I BOTH were totally against going the CZ route until she pulled out a CZ and then pulled out an $8400 diamond (just the diamond not the band included) you could absolutely NOT tell the difference. When I asked her what the price was I was floored . . . $20 . . . WHAT for a 1 carat CZ $20. I thought she was teasing me and she laughed she said she see's stuff online all the time for $200 and up and is just floored but she also said that since she deals in wholesale it also helps her out. She did say that over time since the CZ is not as hard as a diamond it would have to be changed out (but who cares at $20), white sapphires won't but they don't have the depth of diamonds but they're really pretty and clear. She was happy to let us try out a ton of stuff and I think we found a ring and wedding band all for WELL under what we originally planned on spending. Just to give you a hint on her prices she showed me a very thin maybe 2mm half eternity diamond band in 18k white gold for $150. A plain thin 18K white gold band goes for $75. She even showed us some e-ring options with diamonds that were completely affordable and shockingly nice, not yellow or beige in color, nice and clear. Anyway I've gone on forever. The Pasadena Jewelry Mart is at 230 E Colorado, Pasadena, Her booth is C4 (I think but their name is Prestige Jewelers). If it's not too far you might want to check it out.
As far as checking moissanite out in stores I think I noticed that JC Penny carries them if you go to the moissanite site there a place to look up stores near you.
Good Luck.
Thanks Ladies!
I thought about a white sapphire, but it doesn't quite have the right look to me. I'm pretty settled on the moissante just because I know I'd wear the ring EVERYWHERE, so I want something a little more durable than a CZ.
Thanks for the JC penney suggestion, Ill have to check that out...i just want to see one in person before I commit!
I'm (pretty sure) I am getting this one from Moissanite Co. It is the equivalent of 1 carat and will cost a little over $1,000. Also comes with a band, which was a must for my bf (smart man!)
I researched and researched (I'm taking hours and days) about this and about rings.
I found Moissanite Co. to have the best prices and all their stones are from Charles & Colvard, currently the only company to have a patent for creating moissanites. The ring comes with a certificate of authenticity and a life time warranty!
Also, don't know if there's a Helzberg in your area, but they are phasing them out and the store in town still has some left. Put in your zip code on this page and Charles & Colvard will tell you where moissanites are sold in your area.
If you have any questions, send me a message!

Thanks Cubbies!
That ring looks amazing! Im going to have to check out that website now. The site I was looking at had these two that I am in love with:

and gets pretty good reviews on ebay, but the prices look great at moissaniteco!
Does anyone else find themselves loving every ring they see??
They don't turn yellowish over time. They just tend to look different in different lights. Sometimes my moissy has the slightest gray-green tint, hardly noticable and only on very overcast days. I didn't even notice it until I looked for it. I've received a ton of compliments on my ring.
It sparkles like you wouldn't believe and looks very bright in most light. Moissaniteco.com is an awesome website with tons of designs, good prices and customer service. They'll also do a custom ring or modify a ring if you ask them. They're very good to work with. I even lost my receipt and they used our credit card to send it to us again :)
Luckyducky- that solitaire was on my wishlist but my fiance picked a different one. I love how low the setting is :)
P.S. The moissanite in JC Penney is being phased out. Their seem to jack up their prices however. I noticed that the sale price of a pendant was more than the regular price on Moissaniteco.com. Happy shopping :)
I recieved my Moissanite beauty on saturday! I will gladly post a pic here for you! It is GORGEOUS in person!
By any chance, could any of you moiss bees take a video of your ring? I'd love to see the stone in action!
Hmmm... I could try... where is a good place to upload it to?
@ToasterCat: Have you uploaded videos to youtube before? It's easy enough, uploading is just a little slow. There's also Vimeo, but I haven't tried it before.
Ah, I will give it a try tomorrow! I want to wait for some natural light for you!
I love my moissanite e-ring! FH got it from MoissaniteCo and they were great to work with. They didn't originally offer my ring in the cut that I wanted, so my FH e-mailed them to ask them if they could do it and it was no problem. He also got it enhanced to make it whiter. Not sure if it's necessary, but it's an option he wanted to go for.
Here's my ring:

It's a cushion cut, equivalent to an almost 1.25 ct. diamond.
One of the things I really liked about moissanite vs. other diamond alternatives I looked into is just that - it's not a diamond alternative. It's an amazing stone in its own right. I don't try to pass mine off as a diamond (though you totally could if you wanted to, no one can tell the difference!) and love telling people what it is and where it came from :)
@Minutiae: I can try to take a video of mine as well. I've never thought to do that before, so now I'm curious! It does sparkle like you wouldn't believe.
I would stay away from Mosanite....try Nexus Labs if you don't have the money for a earth mined diamond.
Any reason why MrsWoods?? I have a moissanite and I love it! And for me it wasn't about not having the money for a diamond...it was about not WANTING a diamond. :)
@ToasterCat: Woot! I look forward to it! Most videos I can find are from shopping channels, and it's hard to get a realistic look at the stone from those videos.
@whitehydrangea: That would be awesome if you could! I'm very interested in moiss, and trying to get a feel for what it looks like in real life, so any help would be appreciated! I feel like the "greenish tint" people talk about is more a side-effect from the double refraction and would suit the nature of the stone.
@MrsWoods: IMO, diamonds are overrated, overpriced, and I feel nothing when I look at them. Why pay for something I don't want when I could get something that has more of what I do like...lots and lots of fire? Diamonds aren't everything. Not even for e-rings. :P
Nexus Labs has more fire and sparkle than even a diamond....and the better upside....they are less porous (don't collect debris to make them cloudy) and then cut glass (very strong).
BUY WHAT YOU WANT. I JUST OFFERED A GREAT ALTERNATIVE TO LAST OVER A LIFETIME AND HAS MORE SPARKLE AND FIRE THAN ANY STONE.
@Minutiae: I'll take one tomorrow to show it in natural light. I haven't really noticed a greenish tint with mine. Sometimes it does pick up other colors, like if I am wearing a bright shirt or something, but I think that's kind of cool. I think you are spot on that whatever tint it does have suits the nature of the stone. I also couldn't agree more with your sentiments about diamonds! I like moissanite not just because of the colorless look, but because it is truly just a neat stone. Having a diamond ring would have done nothing for me. I am absolutely in love with my moissy and the history behind it (and the fact that it didn't cost an arm and a leg and I know it's completely ethical :))
Thank you all so much! Toastercat, Do you know where your ring came from? I see that most got theirs from moissanteco..
Actually, Moissanite has more fire and sparkled than any other stone, due to its double light refraction. Luckyducky is asking about Moissanite, not diamonds or other diamond alternatives. Bridal jewelry does not start and end with diamonds and each bride's choice is special and unique to her.
It's funny the reactions moissanite gives. I was at a family reunion and two of my cousins had polar opposite reactions when I told them my stunning ring was Moissanite. My older cousin has a 2 carat rock and didn't seem to understand what Moissanite was. She thought it was some sort of cz. I tried to explain that it's a gemstone of its own right, and I knew I didn't want a diamond and thought Moissanite was beautiful. She said, "well you can always upgrade to a diamond later." Ugh. Then I showed my other cousin who was recently engaged, and when she learned it was Moissanite, she said, "wow, I wish I would have known about this before I got engaged."
One thing to keep in mind is that if you order it and decide it's not for you, you have 30 days to return it.
@LuckyDucky- my moissy was a custom job from PromoLK.com they were wonderful to work with and my custom price was RIDICULOUSLY good. And for those who wish to see a video, I will get right on that... too bad today is overcast because my little gem is CRAZY in the sunlight!
Also- to the naysayers- there is no way a CZ could ever outshine a moissanite... it's just not physically possible. I am so unbelievably happy with my moissy. She has almost as much character as I do! :P
Here's a short video of mine in the sunlight. FH and I are moving next week and I just realized that our cameras already packed, so this is the best I could do with my phone. It's not very clear, but I think you can still see the sparklies! It's like that times 100 under lights in restaurants and places like that and in bright sunlight. I feel like I have a rainbow on my finger sometimes, lol.
Ah here is the link to mine, its very overcast and rainy today, so it's the best I could do! Hope this helps!

Darnit, the poor lighting doesn't do my sweet ring any justice, but I promise it is much like whitehydrangea's in the sunlight, and yes restaurant lighting is amazing too!
Awesome! Thank you for posting the videos, ToasterCat and whitehydrangea! In TC's video I can see what the basic coloring/look of the stone is, and in wh's...dang...they're not kidding about the fire!
I'm glad the two different videos could show you the properties of the stone Minutiae, I hope this thread has helped you to make a well educated decision! :)
So I was just checking out that Nexus labs place for those who might be interested and the moissanite still has more brilliance, dispersion, and refraction than the nexus labs stone. Also, the nexus labs stone (whatever it is) is singly refractive, so it wouldn't be as sparkley as the moissanite. :) That being said, I could find nothing comparing the porosity of moissanite to the nexus lab stone nor could I find where it stated the hardness of the nexus lab stone on the Mohs hardness scale.
The Nexus Lab stone is a 9.something hardness on the scale (diamonds are 10, labs is slightly lower)...Moissanites cannot. We talked to them over the phone and they guarentee they cut glass and it says so on my Certificate. Nexus Lab stones will not chip, damage or change colors....Moissanite turn greener and greener over time.
Moissanites are cut differently than diamonds....which make them visually fake looking because they are so bright. They look like a fake CZ. I guess if that's what you want than get a Moissanite....If you want something that will last forever and your jeweler will not even know its lab created and wasn't made and mined from the earth....Go with Nexus or another Lab created stone.
My Verragio Engagement Ring with a beautiful 1.50 carat lab created diamond in center. And .30 diamonds surrounding on sides and underneath. The Nexus Diamond is AIG Certified and is not only inscribed with my Diamonds number code....it has written on the diamond girdle "I love you Mandy" (thanks to my sweetie).

WH..that thing looks like it can blind people!! Thanks so much for posting your videos, that really helps my decision. I hope I can post mine soon!
At any rate, many of us love our moissanites and have had no problems with them. They are beautiful stones with a very unique origin. I've never been told my ring looks like a CZ. Everyone comments on how sparkly it is. Either way, good luck to you Ducky!!!
@missyjane: True story. I'm not a fan of DNL anyway because they mislead customers by calling their stones synthetic diamonds (meaning, actual lab-created diamonds) rather than diamond simulants (products like CZ), which is what they really are. They jump through hoops to avoid the words Cubic Zirconia. Shady business. Gemesis and Apollo have the real deal in terms of synthetics, and Asha is a nice diamond-coated CZ.
@BecomingMrsWoods: I don't understand where you're getting your information. Any stone above a 5 on Mohs can cut glass...that's not claiming anything special. Moissanite has a hardness of 9.25, which is harder than CZ (8.5) and everything else, excepting diamonds. Its toughness is excellent, where CZ's is good. Gem cuts are basically the same for all gems, and variation happens with all stones because of the stone itself, person cutting it, etc. Moiss gets greener with size and lighting, not with age, and the technology is so good now that it's pretty much a non-issue, as the rings posted here show. And moiss is lab-created. Phew. Your ring is lovely, but moiss is still at the top of my list for colorless stones. Can't beat moiss for fire! :)
Wow ladies...you are AWESOME for posting your ring videos. How gorgeous. I am SO EXCITED to purchase Moissanite stones to place in my custom ring setting this summer...I am swooning so hard thinking about how beautiful and dreamy it's going to be. Minutiae, thanks for again jumping into the Moissanite threads with the science behind these amazing stones. Personally, all my research tells me that this is the most fabulous non-diamond 'colorless' stone (and frankly, there aren't too many diamonds that look better than a nice Moissanite stone imo) and I am just thrilled that such a fiery, sparkly, and hard, durable beauty exists for such a reasonable price.
@Minutiae: you are awesome! I definitely learned some things from your post. Thanks for sharing :)
I'm so glad this thread could help some others get excited about their upcoming moissy purchases, or at least help them make a more educated decision about it. I love my moissanite more than I can say, and it's so exciting to me to see other people getting excited about it because, in my experience, not a lot of people even know it exists.
@BecomingMrsWoods: Basic marketing. Nexus wants you to buy THEIR product so of course THEIR website will say whatever it takes to make them look like the _clear_ choice.
I'd also like to point out that diamonds are not the end all to be all and diamonds for engagement rings didn't come into fashion until sometime about 70 years ago. Thank DeBeers (specifically the "Diamonds are Forever" ad campaign from 1938) for that. Please don't assume that someone is going with a different gem (yes, moissanite is a gem) because they can't afford a diamond. There are plenty of people that can easily afford a diamond but don't WANT one.
Please attempt to be less judgmental about peoples personal preferences.
