I am currently looking for a new vehicle, and while not pregant now, we are starting TTC this Fall. I would like a car that will be good for a baby. Any recommendations?
I don't have kids yet but I feel like I will want a small SUV (think Nissan Murano sized - although not necessarily that car in particular) when I have kids.
My mom swears to me that within a couple months of having a baby and getting stuff in and out of a vehicle that I will kill for a mini-van.
I'm curious to see other's responses!
We knew we would be TTC (and still are) when we got our second car - it's a Subaru Forrester. Lots of space, but not too big.
My SIL had a Blazer, but with the 3rd kid, she had to get a minivan. She loves it! Honda Odyssey
I have a GMC Terrain. I love it cause it doesn't look like a mom car but it's not as big as other SUVs - plus it seems very safe because it's so heavy.
I think it's pretty easy to get baby in and out of, plus the rear seat slides so you can make more room in the trunk if necessary.
Last year I needed to get a new car and I knew we would start TTC soon so I got a Kia Sorrento. Baby is coming in Sept. and I think this car will be great. Lots of space in back to lug stuff around, 2 extra seats in back for when we have other people traveling with us. Plus, we got all the bells and whistles (navi, built in blue tooth, back up camara, etc.) for a reasonable price. Good luck in your car search!
I'm almost 30 weeks pregnant. I have a Nissan Versa Sedan. It's a compact car which is good for me (I feel like I'm driving a bus if I drive anything bigger!), but it has a huge trunk a lots of back seat space. And it has 4 doors which is a must so you don't have to constantly put the front seats up and down.
I'll have to let you know later how it holds up once the baby gets here! It's been okay for my niece and nephew and cousins so far.
We have a Volvo XC70. It's very spacious, has a lot of cargo room, has built-in booster seats, a great "kid-friendly" upholstery, and some of the best safety ratings on the market. Other things that were important to us is that it NOT look like a minivan (my husband's request), that it have 4-wheel drive, and that it handle well in snow/ice. Volvo's are expensive, but they are really reliable, durable cars, so they last forever. I'd like to get the Volvo XC90 for our next car (it's the SUV-looking model, the XC70 is the wagon model), but my husband wants a new truck, so we'll see who wins out. :)
I had my first in February, and I am still driving around in my Lexus IS. It seems so tiny now..the stroller barely fits and the seats have to be all the way forward for the carseat. We bought FH an Explorer though, so that's the main car we use :)
We just got a 2011 Jetta in March. There's a lot of trunk space and we think it will fit our needs fine - we didn't want to get an SUV if we didn't really need to.
I had a Toyota Rav4, which I loved, but as it approached 100,000 miles husband talked me into buying something new, and not a Toyota. So in Dec, before we found out we were expecting, we got a Ford Edge. I like it, but I miss my Rav. Even though the Edge is technically bigger, it seems smaller somehow.
We are going to TTC soon, but my friends with kids all sing praises of . . . leather seats. Apparently the ability to wipe messes off the seats is a huge crowd pleaser - who knew? I have leather and was planning to not have it in my next car (it gets a little HOT in the summer when you first sit down) and they said I'd be stupid to NOT get leather. Funny.
I drive a Chevy Malibu - I'm hoping that the ginormous trunk will be enough. DH drives a Toyota Highlander, so if my car doesn't cut it for longer trips, we have an SUV to pick up the slack.
We have a chevy cobalt and chevy malibu. The cobalt is mine and when it is time for a new car plan on getting a malibu. We both refuse to get mini vans, we hate them!
I really want a Hyundai Santa Fe. I need a new vehicle and whatever I get, it will be to keep for years so it has to be kid friendly.
My SIL had a Hyundai Tucson. It worked well for baby #1 but when #2 came along it was too small. The stroller basically took up the whole trunk so groceries and other stuff had to go beside baby #1. So once she was pregnant with #2, they bought a van. A Pontiac Montana. It's pretty nice for a van :) They took out the 3rd row of seats (they dont fold into the floor) so they have a ton of room in the trunk now.
We won't be TTC until the end of the year, but bought a car already in prep. I got a Toyota Venza because it's got the size of an SUV without being as high off the ground as other SUVs. Lots of back seat space and lots of "trunk" space. It's got the space we'll need with more of a sedan type of ride, but NOT a station wagon. Though I did see a license plate at the dealership that had little pacifiers on it and said "Swagger Wagon" and told my hubby I was going to need that once we have kids.
We have a 2006 Chevy Equinox with all the bells and whistles. I love it! The back seats have a ton of room and lots of room behind them. Not as big as the trailblazer or Tahoe but it's still great. I have 7 growing nephews, 1 of which is a football player, and I can fit 3 of them comfortably....it drives great on long trips too. :)
although no kids yet, we want them! but i drive a ford escape and i love it!! lots of room i babysit 4 kids and three are in full car seats and they all fit in there, plus a double stroller fits and all the toys, diaper bags, groceries plus a roof rack and its leather!! ya its hot in the summer but makes clean up easy!! my husband drives a 09 nissan altima and all 3 car seats fir in the back seat too! truck it huge!!
I'm not a parent, but my mom traded in her Chevy sedan for a minivan as soon as she had more than one kid. The first minivan was a Plymouth, the second a Dodge Caravan. She finally got rid of it due to age, but the extended minivan was the best thing she ever did (or so I'm told). Now that my sister and I are out of the house and my brothers are teenagers she has a Honda Pilot, but I really can't see it being practical with a baby.
Thanks for starting this thread, me and DH are TTC, and right now I drive a Mitsubishi Eclipse ... so NOT a mom car (LOL). I am looking at trading my car in for a Mitsubishi Outlander or Endeavour when we have a baby.
We just bought an excursion, it's huge. We will have 4 kids every other weekend after the baby is born, 2 the rest of the time. We also have an explorer and that worked great when it was just my son and I, but my step-daughters don't fit well. One is in a booster, the other bulky carseat, which left a little space for my son and he'd have a really hard time buckling his seatbelt.
In the excursion they don't even touch eachother :) Cameron sits in the 3rd row by choice, and the girls are in the backseat, it works well for us! It's a diesel so it'll run for a while and it gets the same gas mileage as the explorer.
I drive a Honda Civic. I love the car but I'm pretty sure we'll grow out of it soon enough. I'm hoping my husband can trade in his crappy (crappy because it's old, I really like the newer ones but for the cost) Ford Explorer for a more reasonable SUV so I can keep my safe lil compact car.
I have a Toyota Yaris (the 2-door hatch)... we'll see how that works out when the baby is here in December, lol
Currently driving a Chevy Trailblazer. Hate that vehicle, but my husband says he is getting me a new car as a present for graduating college. We are planning on a Ford Edge. At that time, the baby should be about 4-5 months old. :)
@winniewolf -- We're in the exact same boat. Bought a new car in April knowing that we woulld soon start TTC. It's a Subaru Forrester, which I absolutely love btw. Also it gets great safety ratings. I didn't splurge for leather seats though. Hope I don't end up regretting that!
Lexus RX300 SUV. I bought it used from a friend-it was a great deal. Reliable Mommymobile. Depends if you want New-new or New-to-you-New.
I have a Subaru Impreza and DH has a Jetta TDI. We are both very tall though (6'6" and 5'10" so the car seat does not fit in the center of either car. It's a little tight when the infant seat is right behind my seat, but not too bad. This wouldn't be an issue for someone not as tall. Both have plenty of room for a family of 3 plus a dog. We travel almost every weekend with a stroller and it's great.
I'm hoping that my car lasts forever, but if we were to get a different car I'd pick either a Ford Escape or a VW Jetta TDI wagon. The Jetta TDI is so sporty with 45mpg and the wagon has TONS of room. I just don't know if I'd spend that much on a car - it'd be a few grand more than the Escape.
We needed 4 wheel drive like Mrs Spring because of where we live. We also wanted great gas mileage and kid friendly amenities... but we wanted something a little classier than the beaters we've been driving for so long (though I still love my '96 4runner). We paid close attention to safety ratings as well and ultimately got the Audi Q5 2T.
We've been driving it since January and absolutely love it! (And I feel sporty while being a mom).
We have a 2009 Jeep Wrangler and a 2011 Chevy Silverado!
We're a very outdoorsy family so those vehicles are pefect for us! :)
Currently I have an H3 (it was a gift), and we are considering trading down for a different 4 wheel drive SUV. We're still undecided, but we have a little time.
I love how the H3 drives...it's smooth and I feel safe when driving it. I'm really hoping I won't trade down, but If I need to I will. = )
I'm not a mommy yet, but when I am I REALLY want a Toyota Highlander. It's a super cute mid-sized SUV.
I drive a Cadillac SRX. It's a crossover SUV and really safe. But a gas guzzler for sure :-/
I'm looking at a suburu legacy right now to take its place.
I was just t-boned last week and it totalled my Honda Civic. However, DH and I were discussing getting a new vehicle in November- now it is coming a bit earlier than planned. We are looking at the GMC Acadia or the Chevy Traverse. With 3 dogs and a baby on the way- we need something a little bigger and I don't want to go as large as a tahoe and DH is insistant on not getting a van!
Good post. While we aren't TTC, my car is getting up in miles. I am adamantly opposed to a minivan, and FH is adamantly opposed to an SUV (unless we were off-roading, which we aren't.) I am definitely concerned how we will find something that works and isn't either.
I don't have kids but I wanted to chime in that my parents always drove a car until we started going cross country with our dogs and needed more space. I'm not sure if I will get an SUV when we have kids, I like having a low gas bill!
I drive a 2011 Jeep Compass and I really love it! It has the look of a jeep and the 4 wheel drive I need where we live but has the extras and feel of a crossover.
My next car will be slightly larger than the car I have now. I have a Honda Accord. I want a crossover SUV. Like the Nissan Murano, Ford Edge, Mazda CX7, Toyota Rav-4, Chevy Equinox. My accord is 4 cyl so I sorta want stay with a 4 cylinder car. Plus, having AWD would be nice. I looked but I think the only 4 cylinder cross over SUV that has AWD is the Chevy Equinox or the Rav 4.
But who knows, my sister just got a Mazda 6 and it's a 6 cylinder and has better gas mileage than my accord. Oh, a hybrid would be nice. I guess I want to upgrade to a larger car but still keep my good gas mileage.
ETA: Oh, I also, decided that I won't be a mini van mom.
I drive a Corolla. I find it absolutely perfect for 1-2 kids. I only had one when I got it but we now have two. My girl is in a booster and his son in a toddler car seat and there is still enough room.
For a baby, I highly highly highly recommend a car with four doors. Two doors can just be so difficult.
Mr. A has a 4 runner and while it has loads of room it gets almost half the gas mileage as my Corolla. We have been in a few accidents in the Corolla and it is an incredibly safe reliable car. I can also hold my daughter's hand from the front seat if she sits in the back on the passenger side :)
No kids yet, but my husband thinks someone one can fit in our Mini Cooper. We have two pugs that already take up the entire backseat with their car seats (don't laugh, its law where I live to have dogs restrained in cars, and the car seats keep their fur somewhat contained). I am thinking a Subaru (my last car) would be a good choice, not to big for around town, but tons of space in the trunk for the kid stuff.
I can't wait to turn in one of our family cars and get an electric car one day... Here are some funny family car videos to make us laugh in the meantime.
