I like starting a library for 1 year birthdays. They get more toys and clothes than they can possibly use. Even an apartment can handle a bookshelf on the wall. It can be the start of a great tradition of books from Auntie cbgg:

There are commercial “quiet books’ and some more hand crafted on Etsy. He will use it now for visual stimulation, but later it has pages to teach them how to do buttons, tie laces etc.

cbgg: I think the book idea is really great! For DD’s first birthday we got plenty of toys & outfits, so something personalized & original like a book of family members is such a cute idea.

You could also do a savings bond or something he will need in the near(ish) future- like a ‘big boy’ potty or a booster seat or something?

I gave my niece a box of art supplies. My then-18-month-old was really loving stickers and markers and clay and things like that. I know eventually the art supplies will be used up, so I painted a nice wooden box and she can use it for treasures or whatever as she gets older.

I think a family members book is a lovely idea. I made just a plain photo album for my guy when he was maybe 10-ish months, and he still loves looking at it and finding his people. When he’s going to see someone again after a long time, we pull it out and talk about it so he has some expectation of what’s happening.

This is a really good website for a different kind of personalized book. I got one for my niece for Christmas. http://www.iseeme.com/vtoddlers.html

If your sister isn’t wanting a lot of physical gifts, could you give them a gift certificate for some kind of mommy-and-me class? Gymnastics or music or soccer (although that one usually starts later)? Or maybe a membership at a children’s museum?

I think it’s called teh BeeBop Band. Lots of musical instruments. Both my kids loved it. Plus, your sis will hate you! LOL

One of the best gifts we received on my son’s first birthday (and probably one of the best gifts ever) was a book my bff made for us that chronicled my son’s first year of life! She used pictures that I had posted on instagram and really captured him. She also included pictures of me and my husband on the night he proposed to me and told him a little about us and how excited we were to have him. She gave me a hint months before she gave it to us and said, “It’s something you’ll love now and he’ll appreciate later”. It was so thoughtful and beautiful…we actually ugly cried when we opened it! Hahaha My vote is for a book of sorts! It’s something they’ll cherish forever.

I have the question!! My niece is turning 1 in two weeks, and I’m really struggling with what to get. I’ve been buying clothes/books/toys every time we go to visit, so I’m thinking we will just give her a check for her ‘college fund’ this time. I was thinking $250? Not sure if that is appropriate. Same as you, she is my only niece (or nephew), so not sure if that’s appropriate.
