So…after a series of unfortunate events (otherwise known as my week, this week!) we have come to the startling realization that we will be about 5000 (!) short for our wedding budget. Our original budget was only about 12-13000 anyway! Yikes.
My main ideas right now to cut things waaaay back are to
1. Do my own flowers
2. Not have a dj, just do our own ipod/laptop
3. Slash the guest list. The issue with this is a few folks have been invited informally via facebook. They are no longer invited…sucks but I don’t know what else to do. We already paid our deposits on photog, venue, and caterer.
Anyone got any more ideas for me on ways I could save??

Does your caterer have a minimim? Maybe you should have a later ceremony (7PM or so) and then serve hor doerves at the reception instead of a full sit down meal? Or just chosing the cheapest entree they have?

Can you talk to your caterer about ways to cut the budget (different food, ect)? Could you move you wedding time and do more of an appetizer reception? Can you limit alcohol or do just beer/wine?
If paper isn’t terribly important to you, there are lots of places to get invites pretty cheap (or to print them yourself with a kit from michaels).
There are lots of cheap centerpiece/decoration ideas out there.
There are inexpensive options for tungsten wedding bands for men.

Try using the heavy duty clear disposable plates!! It’s so much cheaper!

@Carpie: I thought about that, but our venue requires us to be out by 11 so cleanup would start at around ten. I felt like it was kind of late to start since we’d only have til like nine thirty or so before we had to wind things down.
@nmsoonerbride: Your ideas are good. We were already using their cheapest dinner options though and doing beer and wine. I’m thinking about doing the dreaded cash bar *gasp* lol to save on the corkage fee though. I don’t think my friends or family will mind.
Would you think it was strange to go to a wedding where there was no dancing really? Maybe a little but we would also have cornhole maybe and some other fun ideas for games. Maybe a diy photobooth? I just don’t want to start our lives out in debt and if we can’t pay cash for it, its not gonna happen.

If your goal is to not go in to debt, then stick with it.
I would MUCH rather play cornhole than dance. We may well not have dancing at ours. And a cash bar, or no booze at all, is FINE.
Is your reception outside? if so, games like horsehoes would be fun, too.
Can you ask your photographer to do an hour or two fewer?
Maybe ask your family for wedding related Christmas gifts (like having someone give you a gift certificate for your flower)
Can you do a 2pm ceremony? Then you can get by with appetizers and the alcohol thing would be less noticable.

I would forgo the alchohol. That would be the first thing to go for me.
I think an afternoon ceremony and appetizers would be best if there is no dance, maybe just cake, punch and some snackies.
We have extra space at our venue and are setting up Wii’s, probably 3 of them so people that don’t want to dance can play that and we will have a bowling tournament. My Fiance was so excited about the Wii idea! We have one and are just borrowing a couple from people so it’s a free fun activity.
Depending on how much your deposit was for the photographer and how much of your budget that takes up I might just forfeit the deposit and find a cheap photographer, you can find hobby photographers or newer ones on Craigslist.

@nmsoonerbride: It’s inside but there’s a brick pavillion outside that overlooks the river that we can use. It has a tent up and we could set some things up out there. I’m reconsidering the during the day thing just because that would be a more laid back vibe and we could do lighter foods and stuff. Good idea! I like that…would give us more time for pics afterwards.

Your venue sounds beautiful! I second outside games like horseshoes, bocce, croquet, etc. I really, really wanted to do that at our wedding but now it’s in March… so I’m giving up on that idea…. 🙁 but if it was still in the summer I would TOTALLY do it!!
