OMG they are SOOO expensive :( i have looked High and low. at first i wanted a blinged out one but the one i love i cant find... people on Etsy can make them but do i really want to pay $75 plus shipping on a cake topper? what am i going to do with it after? ugh! i dont want the traditional bride and groom so now im thinking just a generic one off ebay... I seen ladies DIY their own but end up paying like $45 just for the actual monogram... I need to get in the monogram cake topper buisness LOL  What are you ladies doing for cake toppers?

I had the exact same problem! I found my letter (S) for like $4 on sale here

    http://www.weddingfavours.ca/pc/3630/CkT/White+Monogram+Cake+Toppers.html

They only have certain letter left, but the prices on the website are pretty resonable. I just bought hotfix crystals and a hotfix gun and have been bejeweling it myself.

FYI, the crystals aren't cheap either.... if you can, look for coupons at Joann's/Michaels.

Here is my topper so far

I found my mirrored monograms for $4 for the bigger one and $3 for the smaller ones here:

    http://www.wrapwithus.com/

I was going to put rhinestones/crystals on them at first, but I decided that the mirrow would reflect enough light to make them sparkle and shine.

We wanted to have just M at the top of our cake. I didnt even realize how expensive these run. We live by a wholesale place that sells decorations and just about everything for parties its called Arnes (another one is Party Boy) they sell them i think no more than 20 bucks. i am praying they arent cheap when i take it out of the box though =(

We got a silver monogram topper at the craft store AC Moore.  With a coupon I paid less than $7.  If you have that store near you, check it out!

Do you have an AC Moore or any other kind of craft store?  I've seen them at a few different craft stores, and it would be really easy to add some bling with a glue gun and a bag of crystals.  I don't think they're very expensive at the craft stores..

@MaggieGirl: we dont have AC Moore... We have michaels and Joann's. I am just going to have to go take a trip down there. Michaels website sucks! they dont really show much... I know they had silver letters with some bling but i would prefer it black if it isn't blinged out.

We got 3 letters witht he Sworovski crystals and it was expensive.  I really liked them and decided to splurge.  We plan on cutting off the spikes and putting them on our wedding albumn.

Have you looked on ebay yet? I did a quick search and jsut scrolled through over 100 results without seeing any over $15 delivered. Most are the mirrored/brushed or polished metal colors, but some have crystal details or you can easily add them for a few more dollars.
