I had the exact same problem! I found my letter (S) for like $4 on sale here
http://www.weddingfavours.ca/pc/3630/CkT/White+Monogram+Cake+Toppers.html
They only have certain letter left, but the prices on the website are pretty resonable. I just bought hotfix crystals and a hotfix gun and have been bejeweling it myself.
FYI, the crystals aren't cheap either.... if you can, look for coupons at Joann's/Michaels.
Here is my topper so far

I found my mirrored monograms for $4 for the bigger one and $3 for the smaller ones here:
I was going to put rhinestones/crystals on them at first, but I decided that the mirrow would reflect enough light to make them sparkle and shine.
ooo thanks for the links! We're doing monograms (jTs) on the top of the cake, and I need to buy some asap!
These don't have crystals but they're really inexpensive! Plus they come in silver and gold.
@prettylizy: I am in the process of ordering my letters... i think i am just going to paint mine black and add a few accent crystals! thanks so much for the site
We wanted to have just M at the top of our cake. I didnt even realize how expensive these run. We live by a wholesale place that sells decorations and just about everything for parties its called Arnes (another one is Party Boy) they sell them i think no more than 20 bucks. i am praying they arent cheap when i take it out of the box though =(

We got a silver monogram topper at the craft store AC Moore. With a coupon I paid less than $7. If you have that store near you, check it out!
Try this site, it's where I got mine. Only $18 + shipping

ETA: I got the Renaissance style large 'M'.
@rachelm1083: This was actually the first site i was looking at.. I thought i was ready to spend $50 for this one... but now im not so sure :( 18 isnt too bad but i wanted our first initals with a heart or something similar.
We bought ours at hobby lobby for like $5 a piece they are pretty cute and totally get the job done!
@JennyChicago: we dont have hobby lobby in california :( i always hear everyone talk about it. I am going to look online and see if i see it maybe i can get it shipped to me. Were your letters cursive style or block?
Do you have an AC Moore or any other kind of craft store? I've seen them at a few different craft stores, and it would be really easy to add some bling with a glue gun and a bag of crystals. I don't think they're very expensive at the craft stores..
@MaggieGirl: we dont have AC Moore... We have michaels and Joann's. I am just going to have to go take a trip down there. Michaels website sucks! they dont really show much... I know they had silver letters with some bling but i would prefer it black if it isn't blinged out.
I was at the Michael's craft store in Huntington Beach and they have letters like these for $15:
(I'm not sure if this is what you're looking for.)
SO I went to downtown la near the garment district and got this!!! It was 30 bucks but it is so worth it cause it was the cheapest I could find. It is pretty big (sorry dont know the the exact size) but it is made with sworski (sp) crystals, They had hearts and different letters still available, I got my vail there for 10 bucks to!!
We got 3 letters witht he Sworovski crystals and it was expensive. I really liked them and decided to splurge. We plan on cutting off the spikes and putting them on our wedding albumn.
After looking high and low for something that wasn't $70 or more, I ended up buying mine from here..$40..came out great!
@stephromo: Looks like i am downtown LA bound. I dont live that far just dont want to really deal with the crowds... but i need to check out the flowers and this
Have you looked on ebay yet? I did a quick search and jsut scrolled through over 100 results without seeing any over $15 delivered. Most are the mirrored/brushed or polished metal colors, but some have crystal details or you can easily add them for a few more dollars.

OMG they are SOOO expensive :( i have looked High and low. at first i wanted a blinged out one but the one i love i cant find... people on Etsy can make them but do i really want to pay $75 plus shipping on a cake topper? what am i going to do with it after? ugh! i dont want the traditional bride and groom so now im thinking just a generic one off ebay... I seen ladies DIY their own but end up paying like $45 just for the actual monogram... I need to get in the monogram cake topper buisness LOL What are you ladies doing for cake toppers?
