Generally if it’s a single letter monogram, it’s the groom’s last name, correct?
If FI and I have the same first name letter, could we use that instead of his last name letter?
Are there any rules about this? What do you fellow bees think?

Hmm. I think it typically is the groom’s last name, and honestly it would probably confuse me if I saw it the other way. But that’s just me.

I think tradtionally that the monogram is the grooms last initial but i have been to weddings where they used each of the couples first initials. I think that you should do whatever you please because its YOUR day! It really doesn’t matter what the rules are ya know. I am choosing to do alot of things that aren’t exactly traditional.

Darn! This is when the bridezilla part comes out and mixes with the graphic designer part of me. Hmmmm… But "M" is so much more balanced looking. LOL
I’ll have to think about this a little more….

If you’re using a single initial, I’d think it would be your FI’s last initial. That’s what most people will probably be familiar with. I really like the idea of first initials… in which case, I’d probably go with two letters rather than just one (even if they are the same).

I think I would be really confused with the monogram if it wasn’t the first initial of the Groom’s last name. I have never seen it done any other way.

Traditional is groom’s last name initial. If you do a 3 initial monogram, if it’s Dick and Jane Smith – the monogram would be J S D (with the S slightly larger).

Are you talking about invitations or something else? I always thought that monograms for invitations were supposed to be the bride’s initials.

I agree that is should be the groom’s initial, but if it’s the invites and the bride’s family is footing the bill, it is the bride initials.
We’re lucky b/c both our last names start w/ the same letter.

Since your STD is kinda modern and cool, you could stick with that feel and do like an M squared type deal for your monogram. M^2…. with the 2 as superscript and no little arrow sign. I think it’d be uber cool! I just found your post on your STD this morning and I am pumped for all of your design details, they’re going to be the awesome!

Luckily for us, like frenchbulldog, we have the same last name initial! I made our monogram on PSP and we both love it. We will be using it on the programs and on the menus.
Do you have two last initials that could look nice overlayed onto eachother? I personally would not want only my FI’s name represented at OUR wedding, so again it is lucky we had the same letter!!
Who cares what people “expect” and what is tradition. Do what you want. If you like the look of the M then go for it, you don’t have to defend your decisions about your wedding to anyone, its between you and your FI.
