It's called a GOBO. I actually wrote a post about it a few days ago. If you have a DJ he probably has the light that the GOBO can go on. The Gobo goes over the lens of the light almost like a cap. I used GOBO man.com. It's $59. You design it or have someone design it for you. Save it to a PDF or Illustrator file and send to him. It's a pretty quick turn around like 4-5 days. He also offers a wedding package for $268 where you can buy the light and you get the custom Gobo.
AH - thats a GOBO - I remember posting in response to your and having no clue what was going on....lol.
THANK YOU!
I think my Lighting guy was charging about $250-300 for a custom gobo...so the goboman sounds like a great deal since the projector is for you to keep. Has anyone tried goboman? Is it easy to set up yourself?
The light he sells in the package was very dim and hard to see, plus the gobo was blury on the edges. It's even that way on the pictures on his website. I suggest using StageSpot they offer rental of very professional equipment that produced a much brighter and sharper gobo projection and it was a lower cost than buying. They were super friendly to work with. Here is their link Stagespot Gobos.
You can have the gobo swirl about but I love it highlighted either near the cake or onto the dance floor. You can have it be on dance floor when you do your couples' dance, or behind the entertainment when everybody is on dance floor, and near cake cutting area when you do the cutting! It's neat and Ive seen them use same gobo but change lighting colors (cheaper) when they move it around.
One of my friends had this at her wedding, it looked absolutely amazing but her husband is a tech guru so he handled all of the details. Looked fantastic though and so fun to dance under!

Anyone done this or know how it's done. Equipment needed? How to make the projection bit (I can design it, just need to know if it should be like a slide or whatever)
here's a sample of what I'm talking about for those of you who arn't quite sure what I'm talking about.
