Montgomery Wedding Weekend Activities?

posted 4 months ago in Alabama

My wedding is this October in Montgomery; we have friends flying in from all over for the weekend, and I'd like to arrange some kind of fun group activity for everyone that will help show off Alabama. Any ideas? I thought about booking some kind of booze cruise at the Alabama River Marina, but was worried I'd have to listen to a weekend's worth of "Deliverance" jokes from my Yankee friends...

Hmm...what weekend in October? There is the Alabama Shakespeare Festival.

Also, depending on what weekend and if Auburn is playing, hotels may be a little slim in the number of rooms. I would advise your friends to book early.

Oct 4th - I ruled out ASF, though I love it, because the showtime on Friday conflicts with the rehearsal dinner, and tickets are $50/per, which seems a lot to ask of my guests - and I'd like to think of something that would allow us all to mingle. No worries - Auburn is out of town at Vanderbilt. I had to get the sign-off from my crazy sports-loving uncles before I could set the date.

HA! Both of my aunts planned their weddings around Alabama football. One did the off weekend in September and the other went all the way to March. It's so funny. I really don't have any ideas, but I'll keep thinking. Are you from Montgomery?

I'm from Montgomery (as is all of my family,) but I haven't lived there in years, so now I'm charged with planning a wedding from thousands of miles away in Montana. Biggest challenge so far: finding vendors willing to think outside-the-Alabama-box... "What do you mean you don't want all-white flowers?" "What the heck is a cake buffet?" "What do you mean you want candid photos?" etc.

Yeah, I'm in Birmingham and I think it's bad, but I know it's more forward thinking that our Capital.

My Fi and visited there for thanksgiving two years ago, it was a lot of fun for a california girl!

We definitely went shopping which was a blast. And went on a beautiful hike i think it was near a dam/resevior but the leaves were to die for.

I  just enjoyed seeing a different part of the country.. a place where people hang dead animals on the roof of their cars!

You mean they don't do that in CA? Weird. LMAO.

To be fair, not everybody hangs or even kills animals in Alabama. Just like not everybody is a pot-smoking hippie in CA. I'm will say that Thanksgiving weekend is the beginning of deer season, I believe, so there is always a ton of men out and about in stylish camo. I don't think my husband has ever been hunting, though I have been duck hunting a couple of times. It's too cold and too hard to be any fun. Ah the things you'll do in high school to impress a boy! @@

AL.com might be a good place to look closer to your date.

How about a scavenger hunt in a park or historical part of town?

Thanks for all the great ideas - I think a Montgomery scavenger hunt could be fun - my hyper-competitive bridesmaids all seem to dig the idea, and it could work in Montgomery where everything downtown is walkable. The groomsmen like the idea of golfing. The good ol boys in the family like the idea of sitting somewhere and drinking Miller Lite. So maybe...slow-moving scavenger hunt on a golf course...first prize: a forty?  Ha. Anyway, thanks for the support and I'll keep you posted.

The boys loved their day on the golf course. And you're in luck, MGM has many courses nearby at different price points.

As for the girls, you could always have a traditional southern tea. There's this place called Gracie's Tea Room where you and your girls can sip tea, eat cake, and wear funny hats. I looked into doing this, but decided to go for a luncheon in an old mansion downtown...

And BTW, 40s are illegal to sell in MGM. Stupid, huh?
