Oh, me, I can help! :)
House of Brides does have a big selection. HOWEVER they do not have a big Mori Lee selection. Not all of the dresses that are on their website are in the stores. I liked a ton of Mori Lee dresses, only to find out that both the Aurora and Schaumburg stores do not carry any of them. The store in Chicago might, though. If you go to their website, then to the "stores" section, you will find each store has an email address. I would recommend emailing the store you want to visit with a list of the style numbers for all the dresses you like, and ask which ones they have in-store. Though, it won't hurt to go try on other dresses too!
It's not really in "Chicago" but White Satin Bridal in Plainfield carried a lot of Mori Lee gowns. I bought my gown there (a Casablanca) for under $1000. Another place that carries dresses for under $1000 is The Crystal Bride in Geneva. And of course, David's Bridal.
Besides Mori Lee, other designers that you might like: Casablanca, Sottero & Midgley, Allure, La Sposa, Ella, DaVinci. More specifically, I would recommend La Sposa Fanal, Casablanca 2037 (mine!), or Sottero & Midgley Adorae based on your description of what you want. Just remember, sometimes a dress looks totally different on YOU than it does on the model. So try on dresses that are not on your list, because you never know!
@Alleycat: Thank you sooooo much for your help! It looks like we have almost the same taste in dresses :) The Casablanca dress is GORGEOUS on you, and I'm definitely going to check it out! White Satin Bridal is not too far from where we'll be staying (about 30-40 miles away), and on the way to my former high school in Aurora that I wanted to visit :)
The only (albeit small) thing that I don't like about the Casablanca is that it is a zipper back, and I wanted lace-up. But if you got it for under $1000, and the sales tax is a lot lower downstate where I am, I can maybe justify spending a little bit extra to have a corset back put in :) Besides that, it looks perfect in the pictures!

Hello everyone!
I finally got my fiance to sit down and browse through some dress sites, so I could get a feel for the style he likes best. He doesn't care so much for the dress that was originally my favorite (Allure 8861, because he thought the neckline was too "boob-enhancing" haha.) So now I've got to start over! :( After going through a few sites, it seems that he likes:
* slim A-line silouhette, or a "less mermaid-y" fit-and-flare
* Ruching
* No/very few pick-ups
* Satin, chiffon, or any non-poofy fabric
* No excessive bling (some ok)
* No lace
Apparently he likes Mori Lee, since most of his favorites were by them. These two he liked in particular:
(without the flower)
So now I have 2 questions:
1) I'm thinking of checking out House of Brides in Chicago in a few weeks, just to try dresses on. Since they've got pretty sketchy reviews, I'll probably order the dress I like best from the smaller bridal shop back home. Soo-- can anyone tell me how big the dress selection is at House of Brides? Do they carry many Mori Lee gowns? Can anyone recommend other bridal shops in the Chicago area that have large selections?
2) Can anyone suggest other affordable (under $1000ish) dresses that fit the above descriptions?
Thanks, and sorry for the long post!
