When I was calling for linens I was told that most companies don't rent to an individual. One company (whose name escapes me at this point) did offer to rent to me at almost double the cost my planner was able to get from another company. So if you have someone at your venue who can help you, I would ask them for contacts b/c they might be able to get you better pricing.
Another NYC well-known co is Party Rental Ltd (the big pink hippo you see all over the place). They might rent to individuals but again the pricing is probably higher.
