@pengoala:  A fancy long gown in a jewel tone (check around with people who have been before or look at photos from prior years to see how fancy the dress is before purchasing.)  Remember the decor is probably going to be black and red so you’ll want to stand out.  Then purchase your mask to match (there should be some options this time of year due to it being Carnivale and Mardi Gras season.)  Do your hair hair up big and wear bold makeup.

@pengoala:  Go to the MAC counter or ULTA salon and get them to do your makeup then buy some of it (I usually get the lipstick at least) so they don’t charge for the application.

@pengoala:  Is it a costume kind of ball?  And what, in your opinion is your best feature?

I’d go something like this.

@pengoala:  Fun! I went to a similarly themed dance with FH at my university a few months ago, it was tons of fun!! The theme colours are probably going to be red, black, and probably gold or silver accents. You’ll be okay with a red dress, but it’s good to stand out a bit! I really like what @beachbride1216: posted – that blue dress is amazing! All the black accessories in that picture are just what you should look for as well. Black is neutral and it will fit with the theme of the party. At the very least, wear some black shoes.

As for the dress, I think any bold colour will work. Style wise, you can get away with a tea length or even a cocktail length dress, and something that is strapless or over one shoulder. The royal blue colour of that dress above, or even purple, would be really nice. Shiny and/or sparkly fits with the theme. I really like purple, as it will go nicely with black shoes and a black mask – maybe a mask that has some purple accents.

Something like this, maybe:

Or maybe this:

You can definitely find similar dresses at stores that sell prom gowns or bridesmaid dresses.

As for makeup, bold is good. Smoky dark eyes, super red lips, or anything that compliments the colour of your dress. Same with hair accessories, if you’re wearing your hair up. Also jewellery wise, that should match your look – so if you had a purple dress, then purple earrings would work, and maybe a silver necklace or bracelet to complete the look. You would definitely need some sparkly jewellery to go with a dress that is not very shiny/sparkly on it’s own.

@pengoala:  Oh I went to a masquerade last year and it was so fun

I would wear a black, red or silver cocktail dress.  I choice a shiny silk one.  Then I wore my hair back in a low bun

I got an amazing mask from online, it was silver and black with a silver feather on the side.

Ooh how fun!  Definitely some fishnet stockings and lace somewhere.  If you can find one of those tiny top hats like this…

I’ve seen them at local costume shops 🙂
