At that time of year you should be able to find great deals on mountain cabins and condos! I've been to Sun Valley, Bend Oregon and Schweitzer Idaho all in the off season and all are beautiful (though I wasn't on my honeymoon). Ive never been there but Tahoe would probably be beautiful too (but Tahoe and Sun Valley are more upscale so they're probably pricier.) Look for a smaller resort like Schweitzer in Idaho if you want to save $.
What do you want to do while you're there? There are some amazing all inclusive dude ranches here in the US.
I can only suggest Colorado because that's all I know. I used this website in the past with HUGE success:
http://www.coloradomountaincabins.com/
I stayed in cabin #1, the "Colorado Cabin." It was very romantic...totally secluded, you can't see any other cabins from that area. It had a really nice hot tub on the back deck, too. I liked it a lot. If you're wanting to go right after your wedding, there's a lot to do in the summertime - hiking, rafting, tours of local towns, etc...but it would definetly be a more quiet honeymoon.
I love love lovee Gatlinburg, Tennessee! Definitely check out some places around there! It's beautiful and there's a lot of fun things to do!
We've stayed here a few times and enjoyed the time in the NC mountains.

It's not too far from Asheville, if you wanted to go out for a nice dinner.
Mast Farm Inn, mastfarminn.com, in North Carolina.
Beautiful and would be lovely and green in May. They have gourmet meals served there too, and you can rent a fancy car for the day and cruise the moutain roads.
We stayed there for a family vacation, and I got to stay in the honeymoon suite, a cozy little cabin restored from like the 1850s, with a big tub in the living room and a great bed in the loft. I was alone, but I could totally see it as romantic.
Check it out.
@Shel2523: I was going to suggest this! Gatlinburg is amazing! also i would HIGHLY suggest Asheville NC and going to see the Biltmore Mansion.
We are going to Gatlinburg, TN. this is exactly where we will be staying, including the cabin we will be in...http://littlevalleymountainresort.com/unit.php?id=2235 We were in the area in October visiting my daughter and drove over to check it out, and it is so nice. Sweet Sensations is the newest cabin on the property as well. We are paying $579 for 4 nights in March, and we are staying 2 nights somewhere else in the area through Blue Green Resorts, otherwise we would stay the whole week here.
Ah dang, I was about to suggest Banff or Jasper, but they're in Canada. Sorry, I don't know the states at all!
Este Park CO is nice, that is were my sis and BIL went on their HM and loved it. Crestted Butte CO is amazing too.
I third Gatlinburg. That's where we're going! I'm really excited. We're getting a cabin for 3 nights, and it's only gonna be like, $700. It's winter, so May will be a little higher, but still really good.
It would be so much easier to respond to posts like this if you told us where you live. There's no point in suggesting sites in Washington state if you live in Texas. It will take most of your budget just to get there.
@julies1949: I was just going to say this.
I would of course recommend Yosemite National Park as it by far one of the most gorgeous locations on the planet. Our family goes twice a year (summer and NYE weekend).
Gatlinburg is great... inexpensive.... beautiful... LOTS to do close by!
I'll vouche for Gatlinburg, TN as well, it's where we will be going and we live only 40 minutes from there! It's great for if you want to go into town and do things. If you want a very secluded honeymoon I would suggest Townsend, TN, about a 25 minute drive from Gatlinburg.
I'll ask my mom which company she booked the cabin through for my graduation. It was very nice.
I've not stayed in in a cabin in Gatlinburg but my FI's family has used USA Cabins before and they seemed pleased.
PM me if you have any specific questions about the area or things to do, I moved here about 5 years ago for college and the area is so beautiful I stayed!
My favorite are the White Mountains, especially Woodstock, New Hampshire. :)
If you are interested in Hot Springs Resorts Mt. Princeton Hot Springs in CO is amazing, nice cabins and very relaxing!
I also think you should check out Jackson Hole, Wyoming! It's absolultely beautiful. Glacier National Park in Montana is another one of my favorite places - though I don't have any recommendations on specific cabins.
If you would like to travel out East, Shenandoah National Park is another beautiful spot. I've stayed in these cabins before and loved them. You even get your own private hot tub! It's also about 2 hours to DC if you wanted to take a day trip.

Good luck and have fun!
I was going to second Jackson Hole but May is still early season up there! The town will still be lively, but things in the park could be under snow still!
I highly recommend Gatlinburg TN. That is where we were going to go for our honeymoon. We have been married 19 months and still have not gone :( Lost our deposit too...LONG STORY
Gatlingburg/Pigeon Forge is where we are going for our honeymoon in October. It will be our third time going, and we LOVE the tranquility there. You would definitely want a secluded cabin, and the link above is the cabin that we stayed in in November and will be returning to for our honeymoon. It's secluded yet close to the parkway area that is full of tons of things to do. Great area!!!! Highly recommend it!

My fiancee and I think we want to do find a cabin in the mountains for our honeymoon, and neither of us are really sure where to start. The honeymoon will be May 20-26, and we'd prefer to spend under $2000 if possible. We've been blindly googling to try and find a destination, but I'd rather get suggestions from people who have done this before. Does anyone have any experience with mountain honeymoons? Are there any destinations in particular we should check out? Any we should avoid? Is there any general advice about planning a honeymoon in the mountains that you could give us? Thanks.
Edit: Also, I should probably mention we'd rather stay in the United States.
