Mr. S and I have been working towards moving in together. I moved my dog to Mr. S’s house a couple nights ago and am moving my cat tonight. A bit stressful because Mr. S’s dog has never been around a cat before.
Mr. S’s dog, Remmy, is a year and a half old Australian Shepherd. He’s a little on the crazy side. He’s very sweet, but seems to be missing some social cues when it comes to other animals (either that or he is just WAY. TOO. EXCITED. to care lol).
My dog, Tucker, is a five-year-old Cavalier King Charles Spaniel. He prefers other big dogs to small dogs, although he seems to be more cantankerous about new dogs in general the older he gets. The only “big dogs” he will play with are my mom’s two labs, because he has been around them a lot since I brought him home as a puppy. So, much to Remmy’s complete bewilderment, Tucker really doesn’t want to play with him. Other than a few snarks, they coexist fairly well.
Tonight, we will be moving my five-year-old cat, Milo, into the house as well. Not going to lie, I’m a little nervous. Milo will be fine. He has been around lots of cats and dogs. He is always very submissive to other cats, but tends to be pretty defensive towards new dogs until they get used to each other. He won’t hesitate to lay the smack down if he feels threatened. Normally, he’s a complete Garfield type and is very cuddly and very clumsy.
I have no doubt that in a month or two, we will all be settled in just fine though. Getting there will be super fun though. Remmy has never been around cats. I think we have a pretty good handle on how to introduce them, but the constant supervision until we are sure they can be trusted together will be fun.
We have taken a few steps to make sure Milo will have space to get away from Remmy. Remmy stays in a crate while we are at work. We installed a latch on the basement door that will allow Milo to go downstairs, but not Remmy. We also used a free standing gate to block out part of the basement so that the dogs cannot get to his litter box or food. We also got a 6.5′ tall cat tree for the living room so he has a place to escape upstairs, too, and not be excluded from us. And at night, we will use a baby gate on our bedroom door to keep the dog in and let the cat come and go as he pleases. Remmy knows “leave it” and hopefully listens! We will have him on leash at first.
Anything I am forgetting, words of wisdom, or funny stories to share?
