@Sawyer13:  Ok, so over a year ago, FI and I were in this predicament.  All I can say is patience, my friend.

Finnegan, my very rambunctious dog, had NEVER been around a cat.  To date, I’m not sure he fully understands that the cat is not a dog.

FI’s cat, Chewie, is the definition of a curmudgeon. He’s grouchy, set in his ways, and constantly cranky.

Combine these two in a house, and it was an initial disaster.  But, now a year later, they’re okay with each other.  Just remember to introduce them slowly, and it’s very important that the kitty have a place of his own to retreat to that the dog isn’t able to access.  The basement thing is definitely a good place to make a cat zone.

Honestly, we had some big problems with Chewie. He refused to use his litter box for #2; he would literally go everywhere BUT his box.  Never sprayed anything, just made a valiant effort to let it be known that he hated the dog, and was going to take a dump all over the house to make his statement heard. In February, we decided to add another cat to the mix to maybe even the playing field.  Luckily it worked, so we’re a household where the animals outnumber the people now.

If the kitty seems stressed out, we did get one of those pheremone diffusers and it seemed to help.

Good luck! Feel free to PM me if you need any advice!
