Okay, we’re stumped. Can anyone offer us some help on this??
My family had three college guys over for supper tonight. We whipped up a big guy meal: Mashed potatoes with meat-and-mushroom gravy (which was DANG delicious, btw). We served stir-fried cabbage as a side dish. Everyone in our family said everything was great. (And although the guys weren’t crazy about the vegetables, they ate the cabbage okay.) However, all three guys were surprised to find that the gravy tasted very sweet. One of them commented that it tasted like PINEAPPLE. There was no sugar in anything that we cooked! If anything, it all might have been a tad salty. (We live in the South, where the salt content is generally thru-the roof! LOL!) And there was certainly no pineapple in anything!
After the meal, my curiosity took over. I mixed a little of the leftover gravy with some sugar in a bowl, to see if maybe some traces of sugar from sodas, energy drinks, etc. could have caused this intriguing sweet taste. But no, it just tasted like gravy with sugar added to it. It wasn’t sweet and tangy, like they were describing. So then I mixed myself a sugary drink, swirled it around in my mouth before swallowing, and then tryed the regular gravy again. Still nothing. It justed tasted like delicious, earthy, beefy mushroom gravy. (And these were even just regulary button mushrooms, not even a mushroom that could have any natural sweetness.)
We’re totally stumped! I know different people have different taste buds, but this was a little extreme! All three of them said they liked it, but that the gravy was just unexpectedly sweet. Anybody have any ideas of what this could have been?
(Not that it’s important really, but it’s driving us nuts!) 🙂
