It’s with deep over whelming sadness & grief that I announce the passing of my sweet cat Gibson. He was the worlds best cat and died way too young at the age of only 7. I woke up yesterday morning to find him ‘sleeping’ when I approached him he was passed. Here was no bodily fluids or blood just a small bubble on his nose. My best guess is he passed away in his sleep of a heart attack. I cannot express how much he meant to me. He gave me such happiness and joy & his death has left such a deep hole in my heart. The house seems so quiet in his passing. My husband works weeks out of town and having the companionship of my dear Gibson and his love made life bearable on those lonely days and nights.
We have another cat Nora who is 110% my husbands cat. While he’s gone she only approaches me when she needs food. This morning she was pacing the house crying -she never meows- and then she came and sat on my chest kneeding & purring which I am not sure if she’s ever done that…. I think she is mourning too.
I know there will never be another Gibson, he was cut from a very special cloth. He was such an amazing spirit…. His love & kindness will be in my heart forever. Nothing will EVER replace him, this I know.
But I already find myself so sad that I don’t have a pet who loves me, when Calvin gets home I know Nora will continue ignoring me…. I know there is no ‘right’ time to get another pet, no one could tell me when. But it anyone has any stories for me of loosing a special pet and getting a new one. How that felt I would appreciate it.
I hope one day I will make another connection like I had with Gibson, I know he wouldn’t want me to be lonely forever…. I know there is room in my heart to love another cat. I just don’t know when that would be.

I’m so sorry for your loss!! I’ve lost 3 dogs that were childhood dogs, so I know how much it sucks! 🙁 I don’t know what I would do (or will do) if/when our 2 furbabies die. Pets really do carve out a special place in our lives.

@MrsHoneyC: I am so sorry 🙁 What a beautiful kitty. In my adult life I haven’t lost a pet so I didn’t answer your poll but think it’s different for every person.

I am so so sorry 🙁 my childhood pet Sally died at the age of 9, in 2006, we had had her since she was 10 weeks old, and I was 6, my sister was 3. We had gotten another dog to keep her company in 2003, but couldn’t bear to get another dog until the middle of 2007. It is so hard losing a pet, I am so sorry.

We always went to a shelter to adopt a new pet the next weekend after a pet’s death. For us, saving the life of another animal was always the thing that helped us make peace with the death of a beloved pet. It’s tough!

I’m so sorry for your loss. He looks like such a sweet boy.
I think you’ll know when you are ready for another pet, it could be a few weeks, months or years but you’ll know when you are ready. Our dog of 16 years died and we had not one but two new dogs within a few months. It wasn’t because we didn’t love our dog because we did, he was my childhood dog and a member of the family, but we missed having a dog around and there are so many animals in need of good homes. Honestly getting those dogs really helped all our hearts heal up a bit faster because we thought of the good times with our old dog, not just how much we missed him.

I am so sorry about the loss of your kitty.
I never plan for “replacement” pets. The universe sends me another animal who needs a loving home. Often far sooner that I would have chose, but that is how the universe works. That being said, there are so many animals in need of a good home and I always believed the best way to honor an animal companion is to open your heart to another.

Just wanted to offer my condolences for the loss of your Gibson.
Maybe Nora will become your sidekick now. Good luck.

Awwww…I’m sorry I’m sure you’ll know when you are ready. My mother’s cat died 3 years ago and she was pretty heartbroken over it. After about a year I always encouraged her to adopt another (there’s so many that need homes) but they didn’t end up getting one (actually 2!) until last year. So it took her about 2 years or so…
I haven’t lost a pet as an adult, and I lived with roommates with cats (we had 3 cats and a dog at one point!) for so long that I haven’t adopted one of my own yet.
