I would give them a color and length and let them pick out their own dress.

I think you should start by not referring to them as “shubby”

That’s not really a nice way to put it. And if they are your friends I wouldn’t even think you should think they would look ugly. But with that said I understand what you are trying to get at. You want them to look their very best. Maybe go for different dresses, same color so that everyone has a dress to their own fitting and liking.

I don’t know what “shubby” means.. but I’m guessing it’s not something I would want my friends to describe me as.

I agree with previous posters… start by not calling them ‘shubby’ and they are your friends after all so ask them what they think flatters them and go from there.

wth ‘shubby’ isn’t even a real word.

chubby is though. However, not a very nice way to refer to people you care about.

Let them pick dresses they like/are flattering on their body shapes.

… you don’t want them to look bad because they are shubby? FYI lots of thin, tall girls can look awful in dresses too.

LOL…I saw this thread early but didn’t know what shubby meant so I skipped it.

Anyway, I think giving them a color that is flattering and having them pick out their own dress is an option. I think wrap dresses are flattering regardless of size or body type.

Try for something loose, not shiny, flowy, that hangs from the bust rather than from the stomach.  Dark colors are good, with simple embellishment around the neckline keeps the eye towards the face rather than the tummy or hips.  And go for something with wide straps so they can wear good bras and not strapless ones.

How about something like this?

What is shubby..?

To be honest, most bridesmaid dresses are unflattering unless you are super skinny. It’s frustrating how they are always modeled by stick-thin models…what about the average woman?

Stay away from satin. It is unforgiving, and the way that it reflects light will show every flaw.

If you can find something with straps, sleeves, and/or a matching bolero, that would give them some support. Also, an A-line is a universally flattering silhouette.
