@BakerBee16:  Make a small payment (if you can) and ask them to disconnect anyways.  Usually, if you work with a utility company to make payments on it, they won’t do much in the way of collections.  Doesn’t solve the issue of your brother not paying you, but it might help your credit.  🙁  Sorry he’s done this.  Good luck!

@BakerBee16:  did you ask him about it? Perhaps he just forgot? As PP suggested, I would call them and try to work something out so it doesn’t go to collections.

You should cancel the cable immediatley and call the cable company to work out a payment plan. If you explain your financial circumstances they should be willing to work out a plan where you pay a very small amount each month. It’s better for them than getting nothing. And it’s better for you than having it show up on your credit report. Also, now that it is cancelled, be sure to return their cable boxes, remotes, etc otherwise they will charge you a fortune for that.

I am sorry your brother did this to you. Going forward I would never trust him with anything money related again.

You’re screwing up your own credit now by having this bill in your name when you don’t live there anymore! Your brother owes you big time, what a douche!

@BakerBee16:  Definitely talk to the cable company ASAP. Get it cancelled, pay it off slowly, whatever they can do to work this out with you, return the cable box, cords, remotes, etc and do not help your brother out with an unnecessary thing like this again.

@BakerBee16:  just read your update. Your brother sounds like a real winner. I guess he won’t “f*cking” have cable again. Seriously though, make sure it is cancelled, the equipment is returned and specifically ask to set up a payment plan for the outstanding balance. If DirectTV won’t work with you, I would put it on a credit card or try to borrow money.  It would be a shame to have your credit damaged over a nominal amount of money and will cost you a lot more in The future, through higher interest rates, etc

@BakerBee16:  I’m glad they are being reasonable with you. Your brother sounds selfish and immature. You’ll be alright. Chalk it up to an expensive lesson learned…don’t trust your brother with $$$ :/

@BakerBee16:  That’s good news that DirectTV is working with you. As for your brother, well all I can say is that I’m sorry he’s being such a dick about it and to you.

I’m part of the “my brother is an asshole” club myself. My recommendation…try to see if you can pay off the bill in smaller payments and immediately cancel the cable. It doesn’t sound like your parents really even need it or want it, so the only person benefiting from having cable at home is your brother. If he wants cable so badly, he can pay for it himself. Your parents can put up with his sh*t because he’s their son…but you’re not his mom. He won’t learn to be independent if there is always someone out there cleaning up after his messes. Believe me, I would know. Good luck with everything!
