Sometimes things go wrong at your weddings. Sometimes the bakery sucks and gives you the ugliest cake in the world that becomes dubbed “the leaning tower of cake”. And you will need to smile and do your best to not let it ruin your mood.
In my defense, I left a message for my catering coordinator the day before the wedding to NOT put the 3 tier cake out on display. We bought a small round cake to display instead. But she had a family emergency and never passed that message on to the catering captains. So the cake was on display and at one point a kid ran up and took a swipe at it. I’m thankful it didn’t topple over.
As I arrived at the reception site, before I could even enter, someone comes running outside to tell me “the cake is falling over! what should we do?!” At which point I’m starving and tired and irritated. I say, “find my mom! she knows what was supposed to happen.” My mom then comes outside (still before we’re announced as arrived) to explain that by the time she arrived at the site, it was already on display and she figured it was too late to take it off the table.
So we were announced and Darling Husband and I had to go straight to pretend to cut the cake and I had them take the cake off the table. But the damage was done – all had seen it and been giggling about it. Although I’m hoping my cute cake topper distracted some 🙂
I have a much better attitude about it now and can even laugh at it. I had been pretty upset but I didn’t let ruin my night one bit. I pushed it out of my mind the minute we finished taking the picture and it was removed. Considering all of the things that could have gone wrong, I think we got off pretty easy. We still had a wonderful day!
ETA: We got a full refund from the bakery… and our guests sincerely all raved that the cake tasted wonderful! So those are pluses.

Apparently this fall was the season for cake fails, because ours got dropped by the caterer as they brought it in so we actually didn’t get our cake at all! They scrounged together a bunch of random desserts for us, so it worked out, but still… Glad you guys are able to laugh about it now as well, what else can we do right?

haha in the first picture it looks pretty crooked, but not anywhere near as bad as it sounded from your story. glad you didn’t let it ruin your day
also, i like in the pictures of you guys cutting it where yousee it from the side, it looks like cinderella and the prince are running to get away from the falling over part

Oh wow! I hope this is something you find hilariously funny later on. Im sure if your guests were laughing it was not to make you feel bad, but a leaning tower of cake is FUNNY! Your wedding looks beautiful

wow, at least you got a refund and it tasted well. 😀
I had a cake disaster at my wedding too. we hired a first time cater to save money. yup, they were a new company and this was their first wedding so got a huge discount. everythign turned out amazing except this…
It did taste amazing though! and yes, it could have been worse but it looked homemade by a very inexperienced baker in my opinion. I was surprised because this couple who made it has serious talent. but, the cake was so amazing tasting so I got over it. but, I guess they put little while chocolate beads in the cake (?) that are a choking hazard for children. um, that wasnt fun having to explain, we had a lot of kids at our wedding.
oh and to make it even “better” the clean up crew (which were appointed people from my family who agreed days before to clean up and I gave them specific instructions) threw away my leftover cake. yup, threw it away! they said that they didnt hvae a container to put it in so just threw it away! SERIOUSLY!? I had pretty much starved myself until the wedding and was mostly looking forward to spending the day after my wedding my indulging in large amounts of cake! I only had like 3 bites of that cake! plus, guess what, no top tier for our anniversary!
Speaking of anniversary cake, I had a cake made for our anniversary that was supposed to look like the top teir of our wedidng cake (since we didnt have one). this is what they made:
not great but also not awful. but, we taste it and guess what? it freaking tastes awful. we spit it out. it tasted like a beef jerky stick with icing. wow, so, Darling Husband and I are sticking to my cakes instead of ordering them anymore. We just have bad luck with cakes I think 😀

@li612: That bit about how Cinderella and the Prince appear to be running away from the falling part cracked me up! You’re so right!

@bestbuddies: Wow! Thanks for sharing your story. I don’t feel so alone in the cake diaster arena! haha

I’m so glad you received a refund. There is no excuse for a professional baker not using the proper infrastructure to support the cake.

@julies1949: Thanks! I agree. All we did was show them one picture of it displayed on our cake table and they gave us a full refund without us even asking for a full refund. We had just told them we were extremely disappointed and embarrassed by the cake. So I was excited to get all our money back.

Oh wow! Leave them an honest review so no future bride has to go through that, and then submit your photos to cakewrecks blog, because that is crazy!

Sorry to hear about your cake disaster!!! 🙁 I’m glad you got a refund!!!
The pics aren’t showing up for me though! Phooey!!!
We didn’t really know what we wanted for our cupcakes so we told our baker to surprise us (I mean we saw her portfolio of cupcakes, they were all beautiful!!!) and surprise us she did. Eveyone raved about how tasty they were but they certainly weren’t much to look at:
We decided the gray ones looked like mushrooms from Super Mario Bros. and the yellow ones looked like you could play tic-tac-toe on them. The big one we cut was supposed to have a pretty “F” on it but you couldn’t really tell, it was more of a shape then an “F.” Oh well *shrugs* I guess that’s what we get for not being specific. They really did taste amazing though, so there’s that. 🙂
