I agree that you should change the top and make it one shouldered, but I don't like the idea of the mermaid bottom. I think the dress loses too much of it's integrity. But that's just me :)
Good luck!
I love it and I want it for myself :)
PS- are you changing it? I like it as is in the picture! I would be sad to see it changed. I want it!
Okay I'm going to try to upload the after again...let me give a few more details...The first part is the front and the second part is the back. The shoulder strap will be made of lace from the top of the original dress, it will be formed into large flowers. The tie around the waist will also be made from the original lace. The top will be a slightly lighter cream color as will the skirting under the lace on the bottom. I will also have a hairpiece made with the original lace to tie it all together. When u see the original dress in person it is very "western" and much darker than your average ivory dress, but it is beautiful!
what an awesome dress! and i LOVE what you are thinking of doing to it! either way though - very pretty!
oh wow I love that dress just as it is. i like the alterations you have suggested for the top but not i would keep the silhouette as is.
Thanks ladies! @Meowkers I really love the silhouette too but I have a small frame and dresses that are fitted give me a more curvy look. BTW that is not me in the pictue that is my friend that gave it to me. 25 years later she can still fit her sophomore prom dress!.
Wow, kudos to the lady who still fits her 25yo prom dress! I think that your alteration sketches look gorgeous -- can't wait to see how it turns out. I love the idea of using the original lace to make the flowered shoulder strap and hairpiece, too!
Your drawings look fantastic. I can't wait to see pics of the final results!
I think it sounds like it's going the be awesome and very unique I can't wait to see the final pics!
Oooh that is and will be fabulous! What an amazing make-over that will be. :)
Thanks ladies I am so anxious to see what the final product looks like. The designer I am working with is amazing!!!

Hello ladies! I haven't been on in awhile, buy I'm back and I want to share my dress with you all. The story behind it is kind of strange. When I was around 16 I started nannying and one of the women I nannied for became one of my best friends in the world! She is actually 20 years older than me. Anyway I have always wanted a beautiful lace dress with a modern flair. Soooo when I got engaged she told me that she has a dress she thought I would love. It just happened to be her 1984 prom dress! So I am having it remade into a lacey, creamy, flowy beautiful gown and I wanted to share it with you all! Opinions welcome!
