I've had 3 root canals and two were with an oral surgeon who'd never met me before. Abcesses are serious business and yours needs to be treated right away. You might try calling your FI's dentist to see if they could treat you on an emergency basis. Seriously, though, get it looked at ASAP.
I don't think it's anything that you need to worry about. He should be a professional about the situation, so you should not feel obligated to talk to him about it if you don't want to (if he's friends with your ex, then your ex probably filled him in and there's no reason for you to say anything about it, right?)
lol oh my! I've known a few men to bash their ex gf's to their buddies, even if the split was amicable. What if your ex has made you out to be the "crazy ex"-- do you really want this guy performing a root canal on you?? haha not to make you paranoid or anything...
Any dentist can perform a root canal, I don't think it matters if they are familiar with your mouth or not. If you'd like to just disappear from your ex's world & circle, I'd suggest you look for a new dentist! :)
So my mouth healed up and I don't have an abcess anymore. I switched to a new dentist. We are actually getting our teeth cleaned at the exact same place at the same time (different hygienist) next Wednesday. FI is thrilled and I think he appreciates my decision to leave my old dentist. Plus it's closer to our new home. I was sad only to leave the very nice receptionist at my old dentist (attachment!) but it's worth it.

I just got engaged 5 months ago and it's now time for my routine checkup. My last ex' (very serious relationship) best friend is my dentist.
Today, I'm supposed to call back to confirm my dentist appt next week- I made the appt 6 months ago. I was planning to change to a new one before i had to go again but I developed an abscess this past week and after reading online, sounds like a root canal is needed. What do I do? I think I might have to stick with him. I wanted to go to a new dentist so I would have the same one with my FI and it would be closer to home. I have not talked to my ex at all since we broke up but it was serious on/off relationship that ended on good terms so he doesn't know anything and I'd almost rather quietly disappear off the side of the earth at this time. I'm not sure if I should switch right now--I think root canal's might need a dentist that is familiar with your mouth?
