- Wedding: February 2015
My FI and I got “officially” engaged this weekend and there’s already been a lot of ups and downs. While the proposal wasn’t remotely a surprise, I was still very happy with it all. My poor fiancé had obstacle after obstacle – the ring came 2 days before we left on vacation (a month and a half late), he’d just lost a bit of cash at a casino and was feeling unlucky, and while our trip to the mountains was nothing but beautiful and sunny at first, the hour we’d scheduled a limo ride (which came with our cabin rental), it started to sleet and snow. Instead of heading up to a scenic clifftop like he wanted (too snowy to drive safely), we ended up going out to the longest pier in the lake and he proposed in the falling snow with the water and mist all around us, which I thought was beautiful and he thought was really, really cold as he’d forgotten a coat (haha). Then we went to Applebee’s for drinks because that seemed like the most ridiculous place that we could take a limo. After that, we soaked in the hot tub while snowflakes fell, which was amazing. Unfortunately, high temperatures tend to trigger my overactive fainting reflex, so right after I stood up I fainted dead away. Poor FI managed to catch me mid-fall and I came to lying on the floor with an ice pack on my head. Overall, it was a wonderful (and ridiculous and memorable) day, and it’s probably a good sign that we can both take this all in stride.
I’m much more taken with my ring than I expected. We went with titanium (I have some metal allergies, and we wanted to keep costs down) and moissanite (which we’d never seen IRL). So sparkly! Very pleased with our Etsy find, pictured here with a dirty Applebee’s counter as backdrop:
We’re planning a very, very small wedding in a year, so we need to make a lot of decisions on what’s important to us now. I only care about getting some good photography, feeding our guests well, and not being the center of attention too much. FI wants to invite more guests and possibly have it out of town somewhere nice, but otherwise is pretty laid back about it all. I was actually very touched at how excited my close friends (most of whom don’t live nearby) have been. While I’m not sure I’ll have a wedding party, it’s sweet that so many people want to help and are supportive.
His family is already revving up the drama, but I’m going to put off dealing with that for now. I’m glad to be on the final stretch towards marriage with the FI!
