Ooo la la!
P.S. Totally LOLed at your "mishap" story cuz that's something I would do.
That is so pretty AND you have inspired me to try this myself! I wasn't sure I was going to do a garter but you have swayed me. Now I need to learn how to sew in a straight line...
Great job! It is coming along beautifully. Post when you get to the next steps and the completed project.
I am so happy I could inspire you to make one. Its actually not that hard. My best advice is practice on a piece of fabric before hand. You can always sew it with the sewing machine, I didn't because I wanted to make it by hand (more personal to me). Good luck! And def post pics.
Lol it was funny
Thank you I can't wait to finish it this weekend.
@tranquility: If I had more time I soooo would, but between work, cakes and wedding planning I have NO free time lol... maybe after the wedding.
@Aure: Sure, what are your colours? And style to do you want?
I'll take one, too! LOL! I'd love to DIY it, but I don't have the patience.. or talent (talent is the big one).
@brighteyedgirl: Ok, and since you're in Ontario shipping will be cheaper for you :-) let me know what you want :-) I would be honored to do something for your special day ladies.
I TOTALLY would have done what you did the first go around! And then would have tried to squeeze it on my leg anyways, it would have broken, flung and hit me in the eye.... that's how DIY goes for me! lol!
But I'm glad you got it done! It is SO CUTE!!!!
@couawilou: I have to lose some weight before I consider a garter but I really might take you up on your offer.
@Booknerd: HAHAHA I can so picture it too
@Aure: Sounds good!
UPDATE:
So I finished my Garter Belt and I am sooooo Happy with it.
So on Saturday I sewed everything together. I made a tight knot with the elastic, shoved back inside the ribbon and closed the two sides together.

I ironed it flat and made it ready to sew in the bow and the little truck pin.

I found this great website tutorial that shows you how to make a little bow. I didn't use it because it was too small for my garter but just in case someone else might want to use it, here it is: Bow Tutorial So I made my bow and sew it on the garter
just enough until it won't come off.

Then came my pin... I sew it on so tight, that sucker is not coming off lol

And after all this, one last touch of ironing and TADA!!!! It's DONE!!! YAY!!!

Thank you ladies for following me and my DIY projects :-)
Great job! I am totally going to give it a try :)
Looks great :) I'm so glad you posted this! I really want a garter belt but all the ones in stores are for tiny child legs, so I'll have to try this out soon :)
I love it! Such a cute personal touch!
Are you guys doing a garter toss? I hope with something so pretty and personal you aren't or you have a throwing one!
Thank you! We are doing a garter toss and I'm also personalizing that one. I got a plain one at a wedding show that I will be adding something to it. Ill post pics of that one when I do it this week.
Thanks ladies!
Lovely!! You have inspired me also! I hadn't even thought about DIYing my garter, even though I am DIYing a lot of my wedding stuff (stationary, bouquets, favours, hair comb, necklace, customising shoes ... etc)
Good job!
@Sparkidoodle: Aww thank you, I'm so happy to have inspired you.
I love this!!! The truck is so cute. Hmmm may be getting inspired here...lol
@couawilou: Awesome Job!!! It turned out great! I'm going to do my own too (with lace and Cape Breton Tartan) but I haven't done much sewing since I was forced to in grade 7 so I'm a little worried. Thanks for posting this.. you've re-inspired me! I'm going to start tonight!
@StellaC: Aww I'm so glad I have re-inspired you, trust me I cannot sow either , I'm surprised this even came out straight! lol
@lionskitty: Thank you :)
@miss_n_hope: Thank you, yes do it! So much cheaper and it's personnal :D
Great post! I've bookmarked it :). I love garters but never thought I'd be able to make one but with this technique, I think I can!
I did it! This was just going to be my trial one but it might be the one. Woohoo!
That turned our great!!!! U did a fab job with it and it doesn't look like a trial one. Yayt
Thank you.

So after my first try fail (see here for funny story) I decided to give it another shot.
So I went to Fabricland (I pretty much live there now lol), got my ribbon, some lace, elastic band, and came back home - this was Saturday morning. Monday night I bust out my materials, including the little dump truck pin I got for FI (see here) and take a crack at it.

I get my ribbon out, measure my leg then I times that lenght by 1 and a half times.
I then folded the ribbon lenghtwise, ironed it flat
Then time to sew, I grabbed my needle some red thread and just started sewing along the edge.
After working at it for two hours, I completed the first round of sewing Monday night.
Tuesday I picked up where I left off. I did this part differently, I insterted the elastic before sewing the lace so that it would be easier to just pull it afterwords.
Then I pinned my pretty lace on making sure that the elastic band was above where I was pinning.
I grabbed my needle and white thread and started sewing again, another 2 hours and the whole thing was done. I then pulled the elastic so that it shrinks down to the correct size of my leg. I did a knot to hold the elastic and TADA!!! Done!
I just have to iron it, close off the ends and then add my little bow and the little truck pin and it's complete! Yay! I will post pictures of final project when I complete it this week-end. Not bad for 4 hours uh! :-)
Sorry if this is soooo long, just thought I'd put a small tutorial for those who might want to try it. Thanks.
