I posted this on another thread, but I thought I'd share here.  I originally didn't want a sash after trying on a blue one with my dress at DB, but then I saw how some white ones looked on white dresses and I thought it was a possibility.  So, I started looking for one that was not expensive and found that even the cheapest were $20 or so!  Pffft!  I'm a tightwad bride.

    So I bought this:

My DIY sash.. just had to share! : wedding Whitesatinribbon

It came today and I tried it on with my dress.  Looks just like any sash!!!  I am so happy.  It was $8 for TEN yards (shipping included).  I bought extra just because I can always find uses for ribbon, I figure.  I might incorporate some into my bouquet or the bouts or who knows.  I might save it for extra special gift wrapping. Either way it was super affordable!  I got the 2 1/4" wide.   I've seen wider but that's a little harder to find (on ebay at least)... for me this was plenty wide to add a waist accent.  For the wedding I will angle and hem the ends, and that's all I have to do!

So my son (oldest, he's 18) says "What's the difference between a ribbon and a sash?" and I said "Apparently, about $10 or $15!"  ha!

If you go this route just be sure to get double faced satin ribbon so it's soft and flexible, not like stiff paper stuff for presents and such.  You can get it in so many colors, too!  I think you can get silk satin if you look (more expensive of course).. mine is poly.

i love finding things for the wedding that arent classified as "wedding" i had to shorten my dress and i searched and searched for trim and every one i found that i liked was about 10 bucks a yard *ya right!* so my future SIL and i were at hobby lobby and found the perfect trim in the upholstry trim department. 65 cents a yard. HA take that fancy trims!

@cr6zy:  Don't you love it!!  Fight the "wedding tax", I say!!  Wink    For example;  wedding shoe clips, vs vintage clip on earrings.  Earrings are just all over the place for cheap!   Same goes for hair fascinators... I keep seeing white floral hair clips and barrettes and such for $5 or less at local discount stores / walmart / etc, but as soon as someone calls it a "wedding" item it's $60!  It's crazy.  I love my little moments of subversive shopping. ;)

@MsInterpret: Huzzah! :) I agree with you on fighting the "Wedding tax"--I refuse to buy anything labeled "wedding" because it's ridiculously expensive.

Agreed on all accounts! Anything with wedding in the title automatically creates 200% inflation!

I caved on the shoes though... BUT!!  I already have plans to dye them purple or black and swap out the embellishments and make them "everyday" shoes!  If I can repurpose it afterwards, then I consider it worth it.   I will totally use all this excess ribbon for gift wrap fancy-ness later! ;)

As a former cheerleader who wore ribbons ALL THE TIME, make sure to set the ends of the ribbon with a lighter to keep it from fraying!!!
